KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Quincy Hawks grabbed a pair of GLVC league games over the Truman State Softball team on Saturday afternoon by scores of 9-0 and 4-3. The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday hosting the University of Illinois Springfield.
Game 1: Quincy 9, Truman State 0
The Hawks got a clutch 2-out single by Casey Brennan in the top of the first to strike early with a 1-0 lead then added another 2-out run in the third to go up 2-0.
The big frame was the fourth when Audrey Hermann belted a solo home run to start the seven-run inning.
The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fifth after
Taylor Spencer hit a one-out double and
Callie Unrein reached on an error. An infield single by
Emma Walbert brought
Kayla Quanstrum to the plate. The senior lofted a ball to centerfield and on the tag play home,
Macy Taylor was thrown out by Brennan to end the game.
Game 2: Quincy 4, Truman State 3
Truman's seventh inning rally came up just short as the Hawks completed the sweep 4-3. Quincy struck with a pair of runs in the first and added another in the second to go up 3-0.
An RBI groundout in the fifth was the only run scored as
Nicole Havel stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout of Abby Maynard. Havel would get the big strikeout in the sixth as Quincy again left the bases juiced.
Ellie Weltha hit a one-out single and
Maria McGonegle followed with her second home run of the season to cut the Quincy lead in half at 4-2.
Havel picked up another bases loaded strikeout in the seventh as Quincy left 17 runners on base for the game.
With two outs in Truman's last at bat, Quanstrum doubled to left center field.
Cameryn Patterson blooped a single that found the grass in right field to bring the Bulldogs to within one and bring the winning run to the plate. Brieanna Klein just missed on a pitch and popped the ball high in short center field that was caught by the shortstop to end the game.
