KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Truman State Men's basketball (12-14, 7-11 GLVC) travels to Kansas City, Mo. to play Rockhurst University (14-12, 9-9 GLVC) on Thursday, February 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Mason-Halpin Field House
Against Rockhurst:
The Rockhurst Hawks are 14-12 this season and an even 9-9 in GLVC play. They are on a one-game win streak after defeating Lewis 69-66 on February 18th. Following their game against the Bulldogs, Rockhurst hosts Quincy for their final game of the regular season. Rockhurst handed UIndy one of their two losses on 12/3/22 in a 71-61 game. They also defeated UIS, the No. 2 team in the GLVC, 62-60 on 1/7/23.Â
The Hawks average 73.9 points per game and give up 72.8, good for sixth and ninth best in the GLVC.
Rich Byhre leads the Hawks in points and rebounds per game. His 17.4 points is best in the conference and the 8.2 boards rank second. He scored a season-high 35 points against William Woods on 12/30/22. Byhre did not play in their matchup against the Bulldogs on 1/14.
Timaris Brown, Davit Kakushadze, and Jake Auer also average 10+ points per game. Brown averages 11.7, Kakushadze with 10.5, and Auer puts up 10.4. Brown is second on the team in rebounding with 6.1 a game.
Bulldog Tidbits:
The Bulldogs are 12-14 in total and 7-11 in GLVC play. They are 7-6 at home, 4-8 on the road, and won their lone neutral site game. Prior to Truman's loss at Quincy, they were on a two-game win streak, with wins against UIS (87-74) and Lewis (65-64). The streaky Bulldogs have had three three-game win streaks this season, last coming 1/16-1/21 against SBU, Missouri S&T, and Drury.
Truman State is coming off a 83-75 loss at Quincy, where the Bulldogs shot 24-55 (43.6%) from the field and 11-28 (39.3%) from three. Trey Shearer led Truman in scoring with 16 points on 6-9 shooting. Hunter Strait and Dylan Peeters scored 12 each, and Xavier Hall recorded double-digit points with 11. Hall added five rebounds and five assists.
Quincy's Malik Hardmon scored 23 on 8-14 shooting along with nine boards, an assist, and a steal.
The Hawks shot 29-57 (50.9%) from the field and 6-16 (37.5%) from three.
Elijah Hazekamp is Truman's top scorer, averaging 15.2 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game. He has played and started in all 26 of Truman's games. Hazekamp shoots .431 from the field and .421 from three. He gives out 1.6 assists per game along with 0.8 steals. He is eighth in scoring in the GLVC, and fourth in rebounding. Hazekamp is third in free throw percantage, shooting .894 from the line. He reached 1000 career points on 2/3/23 against No. 4 UIndy.
Senior Hunter Strait is Truman's only other double-digit scorer with 12.5 points per game. Like Hazekamp, he has also started in all 26 games. Strait also reached 1000 points this season, with his coming on 12/2/22 against Lewis.
Xavier Hall is tied for fifth in assists per game in the GLVC, averaging 3.88. That number is tied with Missouri S&T's Lovell Williams.
Truman plays their final game of the 2022-23 regular season at William Jewell on Saturday, February 25th, at 3 p.m.Â
