KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman State Football team will visit Fayette, Iowa for the first time in program history. The Bulldogs will face Upper Iowa University in a key Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup on Saturday.
Truman State scored 31 unanswered points to pick up their first win of the season on Saturday over Wayne (Mich.) State at home 31-17 while the Peacocks scored 22 straight points, all in the fourth quarter to come from behind to down Quincy (Ill.) University on the road 29-27.
The previous four games played between the two programs have each been played in Kirksville including last year's 14-7 defensive battle with the Peacocks during their inaugural season in the GLVC.
Nolan Hair scored two rushing touchdowns and then helped bleed the clock dry for the final 5:40 of the fourth quarter to preserve the victory on Senior Day. The teams combine for just under 500 yards of total offense on the day with UIU outgaining Truman State 282-210 and possessing the ball for over 37 minutes of game action.
The Truman State campus is only 30 miles away from the Hawkeye State but games played in Iowa have been few and far between until now. As mentioned earlier, the Bulldogs have never played in Fayette, Iowa and only four games have been contested in the state's borders since 1994. Three have been played at Drake (2019, 2014, 2002) and the other against Morningside in Sioux Falls (2017). Truman State has played 13 different schools from the state with the most games played against a single school being the now-closed Parsons College, located in Fairfield, with 12 games.
Last Time Out:
For the fourth time in four games, the Bulldog Football team trailed after the first quarter and didn't have a lead into the locker room at halftime. However, the Bulldogs exploded for 21 three third-quarter touchdowns and 31 unanswered points in a 31-17 win over Wayne (Mich.) State on Saturday.
Vinnie Calvaruso put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 28-yard field goal with six minutes left in the second quarter. That made the score 10-3 and where it would stay for halftime.
The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and marched 64 yards in nine plays before
Denim Cook powered in an 8-yard touchdown run to even the score at 10 each. The Warriors went three and out on their first possession of the half and the Bulldogs engineered a seven-play, 56-yard drive with Cook catching an 11-yard pass from
Dylan Hair to give the team their first lead in a game this season.
The excitement continued later in the quarter when
Jake Closser returned a Wayne State punt 80 yards for a 24-10 lead. It was the first punt return for a touchdown, non-blocked, by the Bulldogs since 2019 and only four yards shy of the school record for a punt return touchdown. Closser was named the GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week for the score.
Hair capped off Truman State's longest drive of the game with a 2-yard rushing touchdown on fourth and goal to make it 31-10. The Bulldogs chewed up over six minutes and went 72 yards in 10 plays.
Hair finished an efficient 16-of-23 passing for 134 yards while also turning in the longest play from scrimmage with a 42-yard run. Cook gained a season-high 94 yards on 18 attempts and
Jack Butchko carried seven times for 53 yards.
It was the fourth straight win over Wayne State in the series and sixth out of eight games played between the two schools.
Upper Iowa trailed 20-7 entering the fourth quarter in their GLVC game with Quincy (Ill.). The Peacocks needed just one play to turn a fumble recovery into a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. They would go up 21-20 on a five-yard touchdown run by Jayden Mitchen which finished off an eight-play, 71-yard drive with 6:42 to play.
An interception near midfield stopped the Hawks next drive and Mitchell scored his third TD of the day on a 39-yard run to go up 29-20 with 1:53 to play.
Quincy would sweep down the field and score to pull within two but could not recover the onsides kick.
Mitchell racked up 169 rushing yards on 22 touches and added 16 receiving yards and a two-point conversion reception to garner GLVC Offensive Player of the Week accolades. The Peacocks edged the Hawks in total yards by a 412 to 359 final tally.
