Bain on why he chose Truman:  “I chose Truman State because the coaches believe in me, and believe in what I can do on the baseball field.  They are giving me an opportunity to continue my baseball career and I owe them everything for that.”

Davis on Bain: “We had the opportunity to watch Leyton play at MACC several times.  Each time we saw him, we loved him more than the last time.  He makes the routine play in the outfield but even more impressive, he makes the great plays look routine!  He’s an on-base machine with the ability to drive the gaps, is incredibly fast and fearless on the bases.  Best yet, he’s a run scorer!  We look forward to having Leyton become a Bulldog!”

De Smet Jesuit Coach Tim Canavan on Phillips:  “Nick is a prototypical right-handed power pitcher with long levers and high baseball IQ. Commands 4 pitches with a fastball in the upper 80s. Bulldog mentality and natural leader, Nick is a tireless worker with a true passion for the game. He leaves an outstanding legacy at De Smet Jesuit.”

Phillips on why he chose Truman:  “I chose Truman State because I was very drawn to the school for what it could offer me as an academic institution, as well as for the coaching staff on the baseball team. Planning to be a pre-med major, I was looking for a school that had the academic rigor to prepare me for graduate school, as well as a competitive baseball program. Truman offers both of these. Coupling competitive GLVC athletics with a first-class education was something that few other schools were able to offer, especially at such a great price. The coaches I have met really seem to care about how I develop not only as a baseball player, but also as a person. There was no other school that seemed to be as perfect of a match for me as Truman, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my athletic and academic career there.”

Davis on Phillips:  “We learned about Nick late in the fall and fell in love with him on the mound.  We think he can compete at a high level as a freshman.  He has a strong arm and knows how to pitch and compete.  We also think he much more in the tank.  He’s a tall, long guy with some serious whip.  We look forward to Nick getting on campus and competing as a Bulldog!”

-Team defensive player of the year

Club Team-Fox River Bandits

Lake Country Coach David Bahr on Schieffer:  “Lake Country Lutheran is so excited and proud at the announcement that Gavin Schieffer has signed to become a Bulldog baseball player at Truman State University.  Gavin has been an outstanding student, athlete, and leader in our baseball program for the past four years and we anticipate that he will continue to be that at Truman as well.  Gavin’s skill set and intellect have set him apart as an elite defensive catcher and a high average hitter at the HS level and we believe those attributes will all translate well to the college game also.  We look forward to seeing how Truman will be able to advance Gavin’s skill set and intellect to an even higher level of baseball and community impact over the next four years.”

Schieffer on why he chose Truman:  “After working out with the Truman Bulldogs and meeting with coach Davis, the decision to attend Truman State was easy.  I truly appreciated the time spent with the team and coach.  Coming from a small high school, the campus size was a perfect fit.  The student-teacher ratio at Truman State will ensure my success in my college classes.”

Davis on Schieffer:  “We learned about Gavin late in the summer and when we saw him play, we loved his game.  We think he can compete at a high level defensively behind the plate.  He has a strong arm and receives the baseball very well.  We also think he hasn’t yet touched his potential at the plate.  He’s a big, strong man who has the potential to hit the ball with great authority in the future.  We look forward to Gavin getting on campus and competing as a Bulldog!”

Tovar on why he chose Truman:  “I chose Truman because of all the great things I’ve heard about it from my coach and teammate who is currently a student-athlete there.  After multiple interactions with coach Davis, I have no doubt I’ll grow into the best version of myself on Truman’s baseball team.”

Davis on Tovar:  “We saw Danny while his Tigers Riverside were in St. Louis at a tournament this summer. I was going to see Tommy Krock who had already signed with us for the 2023-24 season.  I loved watching Danny play!  He is a slick infielder with a good arm, can run well, has an advanced approach at the plate, but most of all, he plays the game extremely hard and to win!  I can’t wait to get Danny here to have him compete for the Bulldogs!”
