Six-run seventh allows Bulldog Baseball to double-up St. Cloud State, 10-5

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Truman State kept at St. Cloud State, scoring late for the second straight game, to turn a 5-4 Husky lead at the stretch to a 10-5 Bulldog win.

Freshman starter Nick Phillips worked an efficient eight innings to pick up his first win in the Purple and White coaxing St. Cloud State to leave seven on base despite ten hits and two walks. Staked to a 1-0 lead when sophomore Reed Drabant plated freshman Gavin Schieffer with an RBI single in the second, Phillips allowed just two baserunners through three before getting into fourth-inning trouble. St. Cloud scored four after loading the bases with two RBI singles and a Truman State wild pitch to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth.

Sophomore Dakota Joggerst opened the Truman State half of the fourth singling off the body of St. Cloud State starter Christian Lessman and would later score on a Schieffer sacrifice fly. The 4-2 Husky lead held until bottom five when a St. Cloud error opened the gates to two runs on a double by sophomore Oliver Degenhardt and sac fly by junior Tyler Tieman. Husky Brayden Jacobson's sixth-inning solo homerun broke the 4-4 tie through six and a half innings.

Degenhardt started the Bulldog rally with a two-out single and stolen base followed by an intentional walk of Joggerst and free pass to Tieman to load the bags and chase starter Lessman. Senior Luke Roussel singled to score Degenhardt and Joggerst with Drabant plating Tieman and Roussel on a two-run double. A two-run Husky error scored Schieffer and Drabant and give Truman State a 10-5 lead.

Joggerst and Schieffer each scored two runs to pace the Bulldogs while Degenhardt and Drabant each collected a double among their two hits. Drabent led the Bulldogs with three RBI.

The win gives the Purple and White a record of 3-11 while St. Cloud falls to 5-8. The two face off at 11 a.m. tomorrow with the Bulldogs eying a three-game sweep before the GLVC season gets underway next weekend at Upper Iowa.
