(ROMEOVILLE, Ill.) – The box score showed 20 total shots for the Truman men's soccer team in its critical road contest on Sunday at Lewis (Ill.) University, but it was the un-recorded 21st that proved to make all the difference.
An own goal by the host Flyers in the 13th minute of the first half was all that the Bulldog squad needed to pick up a key 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon. Both teams entered the match ranked No. 2 in their respective regions, with the Bulldogs (7-2) sitting 2nd in the South Central and Lewis (10-4) ranking second in the Midwest.
The Bulldogs outshot Lewis, 20-11, for the match and held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Truman also maintained pressure in the offensive zone by earning eight corner kicks in what was a physical match between the two rivals. Truman had 12 fouls and four yellow cards whistled against them in the match, but sophomore Tyler Knierim logged his fourth shutout of the season by making three saves.
The victory improved Truman's current winning streak to five and halted the Flyers' own winning streak at nine. It also was the Bulldogs' first victory against Lewis, a national semifinalist last season, since 2005.
Truman returns to Kirksville for its second-straight match against one of the GLVC's top programs when it hosts Quincy (Ill.) University at 2 pm on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks are currently ranked sixth in the Midwest region and are 8-5 heading into a Sunday afternoon match at St. Joseph's (Ind.) College.
