(EMPORIA, Kan.) – Sophomore Olivia Hayes (Clayton, Mo., Clayton) scored a game-tying goal in the 88th minute to allow the Truman women's soccer team to stave off an upset by Emporia State, as the Bulldogs and Hornets played to a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (8-2-5, 7-1-5 MIAA) fell behind midway through the first half when ESU's Jessica Decker scored to put the Hornets ahead, 1-0.
Truman had multiple chances to tie, outshooting ESU, 30-6 for the match and 11-2 on goal, before finally breaking through with the equalizer, as Hayes tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season off a Kelsey Twellman (St. Louis, Mo., Incarnate Word Academy) assist to force extra time with three minutes to play. However, neither team could find the netting in the extra 20 minutes, leading Truman to its fifth draw of the season – all in conference play.
The five ties on the season equals the most for the Truman program since 1996 and most ever for the Bulldogs since MIAA play began in 1999.
Truman will be off this week until Saturday (Oct. 30) when it hosts Washburn at 12 pm. The Bulldogs will recognize their two seniors – Beth Bystrom and Danielle Hill – prior to the start of the match.
