KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A first-half goal by Megan Buri and an insurance second-half tally by Suzanne Pelley helped the Truman women's soccer team pick up a key 2-0 regional win against Washburn (Kan.) University on Saturday afternoon.
Buri (Parkville, Mo., Park Hill South) notched her fifth goal of the season in the game's 33rd minute when she dribbled through two defenders and beat WU keeper Ashley Klone to get the 'Dogs on the board.
Then, in the 76th minute, Pelley (Weldon Spring, Mo., Francis Howell) corralled a pass from Olivia Hayes (Clayton, Mo., Clayton) and fired a rocket into the top left corner, giving Truman a 2-0 advantage.
The Truman defense was strong all day in picking up its MIAA-leading 10th shutout of the season. Emily Bozdeck (St. Louis, Mo., Lindbergh) moved to 4-0-1 on the season and earned her fourth shutout with four saves, lowering her season-long goals-against average to a meager 0.17.
Truman (9-2-5, 8-1-5 MIAA) took 15 shots to Washburn's eight and fired seven shots on goal. The Lady Blues (5-8-3, 5-7-2 MIAA) earned six corners to just three for Truman.
The Bulldogs close out the home portion of their schedule on Thursday (Nov. 4) against No. 2 Central Missouri, who has already clinched the MIAA title. Two matches (including UCM) remain in the 2010 regular season for Truman, who is currently sixth in the NCAA South Central region. The top six teams qualify for the NCAA postseason.
