Bulldogs Ground Skyhawks With Thrilling Victory

September 10, 2010
Box Score

(KIRKSVILLE, Mo.) – The Truman men's soccer team scored two second-half goals, including the game-winner in the 76th minute, to come from behind and hand the defending national champion and 16th-ranked Fort Lewis (Colo.) Skyhawks a 2-1 defeat at the Truman Soccer Park on Friday afternoon.

“I couldn't be more proud of the team and the tradition they fought for today,” head coach Duke Cochran said. “They dug deep and worked extremely hard for each other to get the result against a very talented Fort Lewis team.”

The Bulldogs (2-1) fell behind in the 14th minute to the visiting Skyhawks (1-2), who entered the season as the nation's preseason No. 1 team, when FLC's Abdel Becerra found space and broke away to sneak a shot past Truman keeper Tyler Knierim (Hartsburg, Mo., Southern Boone).

Despite being outshot, 7-3, in the first 45 minutes, Truman kept the game within reach and got on the board less than four minutes into the second half when sophomore Andy Chapman (St. Louis, Mo., Fort Zumwalt South) blasted a shot from more than 30 yards out past Nate Bell to tie the score. Junior Jonathan Brown (Perth, Scotland, Auchterarder) logged his first assist of the season by playing a pass to Chapman and setting him up for the score.

Then, with just 14:47 to play in the game, senior Matt Kimball (Kirkwood, Mo., Kirkwood) took a pass from senior Bobby Larkin (St. Louis, Mo., Parkway) and, while sliding, snuck a shot past Bell's outstretched arms and into the corner of the net to give Truman a 2-1 lead.

Knierim and the Bulldog back line then continued to hold firm in the waning minutes, making three more saves and preserving the key home victory for the purple and white.

FLC outshot the Bulldogs 15-11 overall, and 8-5 on goal, but were offsides on three occasions to just one for Truman.

Truman will take the next week off before traveling to Drury (Mo.) University next Friday (Sept. 17) morning at 11 am.
