Bulldogs, Lady Blues Play to 1-1 Draw

September 30, 2010

(TOPEKA, Kan.) – The No. 22 Truman women's soccer squad pounded the Washburn defense all night, but the Bulldogs couldn't come through with the game-winner and settled for a 1-1 road draw with the Lady Blues on Thursday night. Truman out-shot WU, 27-4, for the match and held an 11-2 edge in shots on goal.

Junior midfielder Megan Buri (Parkville, Mo., Park Hill South) notched her second goal of the season to tie the game at one apiece after Washburn snapped the Bulldogs' 556 minute shutout streak with a goal off a free kick in the 32nd minute. It took Buri less than eight minute to retaliate, scoring from 30 yards out to even the score with a little more than six minutes to play in the opening half.

But from there, the Bulldogs (5-1-2, 4-0-2 MIAA) couldn't break through despite dominating possession the entire second half and out-shooting Washburn (3-3-2, 3-2-1 MIAA), 15-0, in the second 45 minutes. Truman then took four more shots in overtime to just one for WU.

Sophomore forward Olivia Hayes (Clayton, Mo., Clayton) took seven shots (three on goal) with Buri adding six more to pace the Bulldog attack. Junior keeper Jayne Grisham (Bridgeton, Mo., Ursuline Academy) made one save prior to allowing her first goal since Sept. 5 but went on to hold the Lady Blues scoreless the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs are now four points behind MIAA-leading Central Missouri but have a chance to close that gap and hand the No. 3 Jennies (8-0-0, 6-0-0 MIAA) their first loss of the season in Warrensburg on Saturday (Oct. 2) afternoon. Kickoff is set for 2 pm.
