Box Score
(EDMOND, OKLA.) – A goal in the 52nd minute by Midwestern State's Brandy O'Neal snapped a 2-2 tie and was enough to make the difference as the No. 24 Truman women's soccer team fell in its season-opener, 3-2, at the University of Central Oklahoma Classic. Senior
Beth Bystrom (Ames, Iowa, Ames) and sophomore
Olivia Hayes (Clayton, Mo., Clayton) scored for the Bulldogs.
Truman (0-1) got off to a quick start, putting one in the back of the net in the fourth minute as Hayes took a
Kelsey Twellman (St. Louis, Mo., Incarnate Word Academy) pass and chipped it past MSU goalkeeper Kallie Essary to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. But MSU recovered in the 20th minute when Lindsey Pritchard scored in the top right corner to knot the score at one apiece.
Bystrom then found pay-dirt in the 35th minute, finishing another Twellman assist at the top of the box to put the 'Dogs ahead, but MSU rebounded quickly again, needing just 58 seconds to score from 30 yards out and sending the teams to the half tied at two.
Midwestern then took the lead for good seven minutes into the second half, and Truman couldn't find the equalizer in the game's final minutes.
Hayes, Bystrom and Twellman all tallied two points apiece on the afternoon, with Hayes' three shots (two on goal) being a team-high. Junior
Jayne Grisham (Bridgeton, Mo., Ursuline Academy) made two saves in net for Truman.
MSU outshot the 'Dogs, 17-6, and earned seven corners to Truman's two.
The Bulldogs will return to the pitch again on Sunday afternoon when they battle the host UCO Bronchos at 2 pm.
