FAYETTE, Iowa – Two second half goals gave the Truman men's soccer team the edge in a 2-1 victory against the University of Mary (N.D.) on Sunday afternoon.
Andy Chapman (St. Louis, Mo., Fort Zumwalt South) scored his second goal in as many days to start the Truman (4-12) offense in the second half. Chapman received a pass from sophomore Will Hirsch (Iowa City, Iowa, Iowa City West) that hit off his chest to find the back of the net. The goal marked his fifth this season. With only five minutes left in regulation, Truman connected again with Brandon Visonnavong (West Des Moines, Iowa, Valley) finding a Jonathan Brown (Perth, Scotland, Auchterarder) pass to make it a 2-1 game.
The University of Mary (2-10-2) scored their lone goal only nine minutes into the first half. Marauder Nate Rasor scored his first goal of the season with Jake Hawkins earning his first assist of the season. Rasor's goal marked the only goal scored by either team before going to halftime at the Upper Iowa Invitational.
Brown's assist marked his sixth of the season and 23rd of his career. After this weekend, Brown stands alone at seventh overall on career assists, three behind assistant coach Joe Nick and four behind former teammate Bobby Larkin.
In the contest, Truman outshot the Marauders 18-13 with only seven of their shots on goal. Truman goalkeepers Tyler Knierim (Hartsburg, Mo., Southern Boone) and Drew Garrone (Chesterfield, Mo., Lafayette) split time in the net and saved a combined eight shots.
The Bulldogs will wrap up their season on Wednesday when they host Rockhurst (Mo.) University. Kick-off against the Hawks is scheduled for 2 pm.
