QUINCY, Ill. - - The 15th-ranked Truman men's soccer team led nearly every category, including shots and corner kicks, but the No. 13 Missouri S&T Miners came through with a 2-0 victory in the season-opening match for both teams as part of the Quincy Bowl.
The Miners got on the board in the seventh minute when Peter Haw took a pass from Ryan Muich to find the back of the net. Truman had a flurry of opportunities late in the half, winning four corner kicks in the final five minutes, but could only get one shot on target in that stretch to send the teams to the break with the one-goal difference.
Truman came out knocking on the door again, getting an early shot by Andy Chapman saved before S&T's Haw scored his second of the day from 12-yards out to push the Miner lead to 2-nil.
The Bulldogs earned additional chances down the stretch, as Tony Luedecke hit the post in the 71st minute and additional shots in the waning minutes by Chapman and Jonathan Brown were saved.
Chapman's five shots led Truman, as the Bulldogs outshot S&T by a 12-10 margin, including 5-3 on net. The Bulldogs also earned eight corner kicks to just one for the Miners. Tyler Knierim made one save in goal for the 'Dogs.
Truman (0-1) returns to action tomorrow (Sunday) night (Sept. 4) to renew its long-time rivalry with Quincy (Ill.) University. The Bulldogs and Hawks will kick off and close the QU Bowl at 7:30 pm.
