KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Truman State Athletics competed nine times across four sports from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Saturday, Sept. 5. Men's soccer opened the week with a 3-2 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange, while women's soccer defeated Harris-Stowe 8-0 before earning a 1-1 draw against Drury in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener. Volleyball closed the Gorilla Classic with a five-set victory over Missouri Southern after dropping its first three matches, and football fell 28-14 at Davenport. Men's soccer also opened GLVC play Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Drury.
Football
Davenport 28, Truman 14 | Saturday, Sept. 5
Davenport scored one touchdown in each quarter and used a 253-yard rushing performance to defeat Truman 28-14 Saturday at Pappas Stadium in Caledonia, Michigan. The Panthers drove 71 yards on the opening possession and took a 7-0 lead on Landon Tungate's 34-yard touchdown pass to Mac VandenHout.
Luke Allen returned the ensuing kickoff 77 yards to the Davenport 18-yard line, and Truman responded with a seven-play scoring drive. Dylan Hair connected with Madden Irving for a five-yard touchdown to tie the game at seven with 6:55 remaining in the first quarter. Davenport moved back in front on Tungate's two-yard rushing touchdown late in the second quarter and carried a 14-7 advantage into halftime.
Cephus Harris extended the lead with a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Truman answered early in the fourth when Hair found Nathan Ryan for a 20-yard touchdown, completing a nine-play, 62-yard drive that brought the Bulldogs within 21-14. Davenport responded with a 10-play, 76-yard drive that consumed more than five minutes before Harris scored his second one-yard touchdown to restore the two-score margin.
Hair completed 14 of 26 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan led Truman with 52 receiving yards on two catches, while Jackson Overton and Jalen Kent each finished with 42 yards. Hair also led the Bulldogs with 40 rushing yards, followed by Irving with 30 and Thomas Pulliam with 23.
Jack Weltha recorded a team-high 14 tackles, Connor Beerman added 11 and Bryant Pool finished with nine. Truman forced and recovered two fumbles, but Davenport finished with a 397-270 advantage in total offense and controlled the ball for nearly 37 minutes. The Panthers ran 72 offensive plays compared with 51 for the Bulldogs and intercepted two Truman passes.
Volleyball
Pittsburg State 3, Truman 0 | Wednesday, Sept. 2
Truman opened the Gorilla Classic with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-19 loss to host Pittsburg State on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs challenged the Gorillas in the first two sets before Pittsburg State created greater separation in the third. The Gorillas finished with 48 kills and a .273 hitting percentage while holding Truman to 34 kills and a .133 percentage.
Laci Neece and Lily Porter led Truman with nine kills apiece. Hannah Hosty added seven kills while hitting .286 and contributed four blocks. Tori Creason recorded 34 assists and 12 digs, while Addy Janssen led the Bulldogs with 14 digs. Neece added 10 digs and two service aces.
Southwestern Oklahoma State 3, Truman 1 | Thursday, Sept. 3
Truman hit .266 and committed only 13 attack errors Thursday, but Southwestern Oklahoma State produced 64 kills to earn a 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory. After dropping a close opening set, the Bulldogs evened the match by taking the second. Southwestern Oklahoma State then claimed the final two sets, with neither decided by more than four points.
Jessie Julius led Truman with 14 kills, 11 digs and two service aces. Neece recorded 11 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and two aces, while Hosty added nine kills and three blocks. Autumn Erickson finished with seven kills on 18 attacks without an error for a .389 hitting percentage. Creason distributed 45 assists, and Janssen led the back row with 18 digs.
Arkansas Tech 3, Truman 0 | Friday, Sept. 4
Arkansas Tech defeated Truman 25-16, 25-15, 25-18 in the Bulldogs' first match Friday. Arkansas Tech hit .341 with 38 kills and added 11 service aces and 11 team blocks. Truman recorded 26 kills and hit .090.
Erickson led the Bulldogs with seven kills and only one error on 16 attacks, finishing with a .375 hitting percentage. Julius contributed six kills, and Hosty added four. Creason recorded 16 assists, while Janssen collected a team-high 12 digs. Truman finished with three service aces and three team blocks.
Truman 3, Missouri Southern 2 | Friday, Sept. 4
Truman erased a two-set deficit and survived an extended fifth set to defeat Missouri Southern 28-30, 16-25, 25-18, 25-14, 17-15 in the final match of the Gorilla Classic. After falling behind 2-0, the Bulldogs took control of the next two sets to force a deciding fifth. Truman held a 15-12 lead in the final set before Missouri Southern scored three consecutive points to tie it. Julius then delivered a kill, and Neece followed with the match-winning point.
Neece led Truman with 20 kills and only two errors on 51 attacks, hitting .353 while adding 15 digs. Julius recorded 18 kills and 11 digs, while Erickson finished with 13 kills, one attack error and a .414 hitting percentage. Elise Gibson added 11 kills, and Hosty contributed eight.
Creason directed an offense that finished with 73 kills and a .281 hitting percentage. She totaled 56 assists, 16 digs and two service aces. Janssen led the Bulldogs with 29 digs and added two aces. Truman produced 48 kills over the final three sets and improved to 2-6 with the victory.
Women's Soccer
Truman 8, Harris-Stowe 0 | Wednesday, Sept. 2
Eight different Bulldogs scored as Truman defeated Harris-Stowe 8-0 Wednesday at Bulldog Soccer Park. Aubrey Kaupas opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Lizzy Peng, Sam Busch and Emma Thiessen added goals during the final nine minutes of the first half. Truman carried a 4-0 advantage into halftime.
Ashley Klaus scored 40 seconds into the second half, followed by goals from Madison Blomenkamp, Quinn Nauman and Hayley Legg. Thiessen, Nauman, Legg and Blomenkamp each finished with one goal and one assist. Lia Quintero, Abby Hutteger and Hanna Ritter also contributed to the seven assists recorded by the Bulldogs.
Truman finished with a 22-6 advantage in shots and placed 14 attempts on goal. Mikayla Thomas stopped all six Harris-Stowe shots on goal to earn the shutout. The victory moved the Bulldogs to 1-1-1.
Truman 1, Drury 1 | Saturday, Sept. 5
Truman earned a point in its GLVC opener after playing Drury to a 1-1 draw Saturday. Kaupas gave the Bulldogs the lead at 20:53, finishing an assist from Nauman for her second goal in as many matches.
The Bulldogs maintained the advantage until Carly Swan tied the match for Drury at 67:36. Thomas made six saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal. Drury finished with a 20-11 advantage in shots, but Truman limited the Panthers to three shots on goal during the second half. Kaupas, Lizzy Peng and Tessa Paradis accounted for Truman's three shots on goal as the Bulldogs moved to 1-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the GLVC.
Men's Soccer
Truman 3, Hannibal-LaGrange 2 | Tuesday, Sept. 1
Truman scored three consecutive goals after falling behind and held on for a 3-2 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange on Tuesday. Marco Antonio Ramos gave the Trojans the lead at 33:38, but Landon Keisker responded for Truman less than nine minutes later. Nolan Schulte provided the assist as Keisker scored his first goal of the season to send the match into halftime tied at one.
Jacob Panagos put Truman ahead at 52:03 with his third goal of the season off an assist from Frank Robinson. Brady Lombardo extended the lead to 3-1 at 71:32, scoring his first goal of the year from an Ethan Mercurio assist. Hannibal-LaGrange cut the margin to one on a penalty kick at 80:03, but the Bulldogs protected the lead through the final 10 minutes.
Truman finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots and placed seven attempts on goal. Panagos, Lombardo, Tyler Bouckaert and Roman Scognamillo each recorded two shots. Owen Robben made two saves as the Bulldogs earned their first victory of the season.
Drury 3, Truman 1 | Saturday, Sept. 5
Panagos gave Truman an early lead in its GLVC opener, but Drury scored the final three goals to earn a 3-1 victory Saturday. Panagos converted a Schulte assist at 16:50 for his fourth goal through three matches. Parker Jusseaume answered for Drury at 30:37, sending the teams into halftime tied at one.
David Huang scored twice in the second half, finding the net at 51:14 and 65:31 to give the Panthers control. Robben kept Truman within reach by making 11 saves, including six during the second half. Drury finished with 23 shots and 14 attempts on goal, while Truman recorded eight shots and placed three on frame. Panagos and Zoran Sabbert led the Bulldogs with two shots apiece.
