WICHITA FALLS, Texas - - Outside hitters Molly Sinclair and Allie Brak stole the show on Saturday afternoon at the Midwestern (Texas) State Invitational, leading the Truman volleyball team in separate matches past regional foes Texas A&M-International and Incarnate Word (Texas).
The 20th-ranked Bulldogs (3-1) used a match-high 12 kills from both Sinclair and junior MB Emily Briseno to shoot past the TAMIU Dustdevils, 3-1 (12-25, -15, -23, -23). Truman got out to a slow start, totaling just four kills in the first set, before rebounding and turning up the defensive pressure to close out the match. Sinclair added 13 digs for her first double-double of the season, while Briseno hit .688 after playing in just the final three sets. Junior MB Megan Sharpe added nine kills and six blocks, and freshman DS Abby Moser dug 25 TAMIU attacks for a match-high.
Truman hit .174 for the match and held the Dustdevils (1-2) to a .099 mark. Both teams had eight blocks.
The Bulldogs then closed the Invitational with a four-set victory (25-27, -19, -21, -17) against Incarnate Word. After leading 23-20 in the opening frame, the Cardinals (1-3) stole seven of the final nine points to put the purple and white in an early hole. But from there, Brak, Sinclair and Sharpe took over, putting away 34 of their combined 41 kills in the final three sets to help Truman wrap up the event with a second regional victory. Brak finished with a match-high and Truman tournament-high 16 kills and added 12 digs, while Sinclair notched her second kill-dig double-double of the day with 14 kills and 15 digs. Senior S Kylie Easlon added a double-double of her own with 18 assists and 11 digs, with Moser again leading all Bulldogs with 22 digs.
For the weekend, Sinclair led the Bulldogs offensively with 2.86 kills and 3.00 digs per set, and Sharpe added 2.07 kills and a team-high 0.93 blocks per set. Moser posted a 5.80 digs/set average for a Bulldog unit that outhit its opposition .171 to .131.
In addition, Moser was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.
Truman returns to action next Friday and Saturday at the Southwest Baptist Purple Bash in Bolivar, Mo., for four matches. The team opens with 16th-ranked Minnesota State on Friday at 11:30 am.
