Men's Basketball Falls to Saints, 70-57

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Junior Mike Carlson led all Bulldogs with 15 points, and sophomore Seth Jackson added 14 of his own, but the Truman men's basketball team dropped a 70-57 non-conference decision to Maryville (Mo.) University on Sunday afternoon in Pershing Arena.
 
The Bulldogs (4-6) led by eight, 24-16, with 9:59 to play in the first half after freshman Jaylon Jones converted a jumper in the paint. However, the Bulldogs then went more than seven minutes without a field goal, allowing Maryville (11-2) to lead by seven, 32-25, prior to a three by senior guard Tom Norton at the 2:37 mark of the half.
 
After the Saints took a 40-33 lead into the break, both teams hit the skids on the offensive end by combining for just 22 points in the first 13 minutes of the second half. Maryville continued to lead, building a 15-point lead at 60-45 with 6:05 on the clock on an Asa Toney three-pointer. The Bulldogs would get it to 12 on three different occasions in the final minutes but eventually fell 70-57 as Jackson capped the day with a lay-up with eight seconds to play.
 
Truman shot 40% (23-for-58) from the field for the game and went 25% (4-for-16) from three-point range. The 'Dogs didn't help themselves from the foul line, converting just 41% (7-for-17) for the game. Truman did force 16 Saint turnovers and pulled down 12 offensive rebounds – including three by junior Marek Bush  Jackson and sophomore Tyler Anderson finished with five rebounds each to lead Truman, with freshman Cory Myers pacing the 'Dogs with three assists. Senior EJ Hicks added a pair of steals.
 
Armon Provo led the Saints with 21 points, with Toney filling the box score with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals.
 
The Bulldogs return to MIAA play for the remainder of the season, starting on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 pm against Lincoln in Pershing Arena.
