Bulldogs Split with Bearcats in MIAA Finale

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score | Season Statistics
MARYVILLE, Mo. - - Freshman Kelsea Dorsey pitched the Truman softball team to a shutout win in game one, but the Bulldogs stranded 11 runners and fell victim to a walk-off effort by the Northwest Missouri Bearcats in game two during a Friday afternoon split.

Dorsey (Clarksville, Mo., Clopton) tossed a gem in the opener to notch her 15th win of the season, allowing just four hits and striking out eight as the Bulldogs picked up a 2-0 win in game one. Liz Leath (St. Charles, Mo., Francis Howell Central) opened the Truman scoring with a solo shot to lead off the fourth before Katie Pitts (Jefferson City, Mo., Helias) and Kelsey Bollman (Maquoketa, Iowa, Maquoketa) put up back-to-back doubles in the fifth to tack on an insurance tally.

Game two provided more offensive firepower, as both teams put two across in the first inning. Truman used a two-RBI single by Leath in the first before taking a one-run lead in the second behind a Bridget Schade (Herculaneum, Mo., Herculaneum) RBI single. The Bulldogs made it 4-2 in the fifth when Laura Miller (Columbia, Mo., Hickman) singled home another run, but the purple and white couldn't push another run despite having the bases loaded with one out. Northwest then capitalized in its half of the inning, getting a two-run shot before taking a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

The Bulldogs responded though in its final at-bat, turning a leadoff double by Miller into a run when Mary Manley (Des Peres, Mo., Kirkwood ) singled her home; however, Northwest notched the walk-off victory by scoring on a throwing error in the bottom half for the 6-5 win.

Schade posted a three-hit game in the nightcap, while Leath (game one), Miller and Manley (both game two) recorded two-hit efforts. After leaving just four on base in the opener, the Bulldogs struggled to get the big hit in the finale and stranded 11. Ashley Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill., Shepard) started and went 5.1 innings, while Kirsten Krause (St. Louis, Mo., Parkway North) was saddled with the loss in relief despite the winning run being unearned.

Truman (22-27, 6-14 MIAA) closes the regular season Sunday afternoon at home for Senior Day against Sioux Falls (S.D.) in nonconference action. The Bulldogs will recognize its four seniors – Mary Manley, Katie Pitts, Ashley Rotkvich and Bridget Schade – prior to the first pitch.
