Softball Splits Twice During Weekend Action

Saturday Recap
Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score | Season Statistics
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Senior Bridget Schade connected on her 9th and 10th home runs of the season, and the Truman softball team pounded 22 hits; however, the Bulldogs were forced to settle for a split against Southwest Baptist on a rainy Saturday in Kirksville.

After waiting out a two-hour, 45-minute rain delay, the Bulldogs (18-23, 3-11 MIAA) lost game one 6-4 in eight innings before rebounding with a 9-4 victory in game two. After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning during the opener, the 'Dogs added two right away in their half on a two-run Schade (Herculaneum, Mo., Herculaneum) blast. Truman would tie the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, sending the game to extras after a scoreless seventh. However, SBU's Rhiannon Mendez delivered a pinch-hit two-run home run in the top of the eighth to break the tie, and the Bearcats would hold on for the 6-4 win. Laura Miller (Columbia, Mo., Hickman) and Katie Pitts (Jefferson City, Mo., Helias) had two hits apiece, with Kristin Grossman (Glen Ellyn, Ill., Glenbard South) adding an RBI to Schade's two. Kelsea Dorsey (Clarksville, Mo., Clopton) took the loss in relief, dropping to 11-9 on the season after pitching five innings.

In the night cap, SBU (12-24, 4-10 MIAA) again took an early lead by scoring one out of the gate, but the Bulldogs did their part in the first by scoring three times on four hits. After the Bearcats scored three in the fourth to regain the lead, the Bulldogs brought out the bats in the fifth, scoring five times behind home runs by Schade and Liz Leath (St. Charles, Mo., Francis Howell Central) alongside RBI doubles by Grossman and Miller. Truman tacked on an insurance run in the sixth for good measure, as Ashley Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill., Shepard) notched the complete game in the circle, striking out six and walking one on 117 pitches.

The Bulldogs return to action with three home doubleheaders next week, beginning with a nonconference tilt on Tuesday (April 10) at 2:00 pm against Lindenwood (Mo.) University.

Friday Recap
Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - A walk-off bases-loaded single by Mary Manley (Des Peres, Mo., Kirkwood ) completed a four-run comeback in game one of Friday's doubleheader with Central Missouri, as the Truman softball team took a 5-4 win before falling 4-1 to the Jennies in the nightcap.

The Bulldogs fell behind 4-0 in the opener before beginning their comeback behind a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth by freshman Liz Leath. Then, in the seventh, Truman capitalized on a UCM error to score the tying run before loading the bases with one out. Manley then delivered a single through the left side to plate junior Laura Miller and complete Truman's comeback. Leath, Manley, Bridget Schade and Corey Niblett (Troy, Mo., Troy Buchanan) all recorded two hits, while freshman Kelsea Dorsey entered in relief to toss five shutout innings and pick up her 11th win of the season.

In the second game, it was UCM again jumping out to a quick lead, scoring two in the second and one in the third to lead 3-0. Truman got on the board in its half of the third when Katie Pitts singled, stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch. However, the Bulldogs couldn't pull closer, as the Jennies tacked on an insurance run in the fourth and made it stand up for the 4-1 victory. Pitts had a two-hit game in the nightcap, with Dorsea starting and taking the loss in the circle. Ashley Rotkvich threw two scoreless innings in relief.
