Men's Soccer Clipped Late by S&T

Box Score

QUINCY, Ill. - - The Truman men's soccer team clawed back from a two goal deficit, only to see Missouri S&T score the game-winner with less than three minutes to play and deal the Bulldogs a 3-2 setback on Sunday night.

Truman (0-2) fell behind just moments into the match, as S&T (1-0-1) put in a cross in just the second minute for a quick 1-0 lead. Neither team would score the rest of the first half, but the Miners would make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute off a headed-in corner kick.

The Bulldogs wouldn't go quietly, though, as Matt Langley (Maryville, Ill., Collinsville)scored Truman's first goal of the season in the 74th minute by heading in a Kyle Menges (St. Louis, Mo., DeSmet) free kick from the right side. Then, following a Missouri S&T foul in the box, Tony Luedecke (O'Fallon, Mo., John F. Kennedy) converted the subsequent penalty kick with 5:17 remaining on the clock to knot the score at two apiece.

However, just two minutes later, a Bulldog foul 30-yards out led to Miner heroics as Oscar Alvarez put home a free kick to the lower left corner with only 2:52 to play. That would turn into the eventual game-winner, as a pair of late shots by Mike Kane (Chicago, Ill., Brother Rice) and Dylan Carter (O'Fallon, Mo., Fort Zumwalt West) missed the target.

Drew Garrone (51 minutes, two goals) and Nick Wallner (39 minutes, one goal) split time in net for Truman, who out-shot S&T 10-5 overall and 6-4 on goal. The Bulldogs took four corner kicks to the Miners' three but were whistled for three more fouls.

The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 8 for its home opener against Westminster (Mo.) at 3:00 pm.
