Bellarmine Takes Two From Bulldogs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bulldog Baseball team came up short in a pair of non-conference games against Bellarmine (Ky.) University on Monday. The Knights scored four runs in the first inning to win game one 4-0 and rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the nightcap 7-6. The Bulldogs return to the diamond on Tuesday against Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo.
 
Jarod Hahn had the big day at the plate for the Bulldogs as he delivered four hits in six at bats along with a walk for a .714 on-base percentage. Mike Monfre had two hits in three at bats and Paul Trenhaile was 2-for-5 at the plate to keep his season batting average at .571.
 
Game 1 Recap: Sam Reuter was roughed up early in his first start of the season. The Knights tallied four runs in the bottom of the first and shutout the Bulldogs 4-0. The first four hitters reached for Bellarmine with Phillip Leopold knocking in a pair with a single and Michael Belliveau bringing in two more with an RBI single.
 
Mike Monfre had two of the five hits for the Bulldogs and they stranded two runners in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings apiece. Reuter struck out three in five innings of work.
 
Game 2 Recap: Truman rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh and went ahead with a run in the extra-inning eighth but the Knights got the walk-off win on a passed ball to earn the sweep.
 
Paul Trenhaile and Jarod Hahn executed a double steal in the top of the first with Trenhaile coming home for a 1-0 lead. Bellarmine answered with a two-out single from Phillip Leopold in the bottom of the inning to tie things up.
 
Hahn singled in Corban Williams in the third for the lead but again the Knights responded with two in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Austin Crutcher had the two-run single.
 
Crutcher stroked a two-run homer to left to put the Knights up 5-2 in the fifth.
 
Truman rally started in the seventh with Josh DeRouse drew a pinch hit walk and Will Nader singled with one out. Zak Larkin singled in DeRouse and Williams followed with a hit to bring in Nader. Trenhaile lifted a sac fly to center that scored Larkin for the tying run but Hahn flied out with Williams standing on second base.
 
Taylor Brooks got the final two outs of the seventh leaving a pair of runners stranded.
 
The Bulldogs took the lead when Blake Deaton singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
 
After Brooks got the first hitter retired in the eighth, a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases. Cody Gardner was summoned from the pen and induced a double-play ball but leadoff hitter Jes Staples was able to beat it out at first allowing the tying run to score. With runners at the corners, Trevor Schneider scored from third on a passed ball for the walk-off win.
 
Tyler Spencer pitched six innings for the Bulldogs and was not involved in the decision.
