'Dogs Make It Three Straight With Sweep Over Saints

ST. LOUIS, Mo.  – The Bulldog Baseball team took the final three games to win their Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division series against Maryville (Mo.) University. Truman swept Saturday's doubleheader by 8-7 and 13-3 scores.
 
The offense hit .343 for the weekend with Corban Williams (.471), Dave Gambino (.467) and Paul Trenhaile (.467) all coming up big for the 'Dogs. Williams drove in four runs while going 2-for-3 in stolen bases to push his season total to 20 while Gambino added five RBIs and Trenahile three.  Zak Larkin added three steals to close to within three of the Truman career record of 51 and the eight total steals by the Bulldogs over the series closed the team to within three of the single-season record of 77.
 
Not to be outdone, the Bulldog pitching staff put up a 3.66 ERA with Cody Gardner, Sam Reuter and Chris Allard picking up the victories.
 
The Bulldogs will begin a key six-game divisional homestand on Wednesday afternoon hosting rival Quincy (Ill.) for a twinbill before welcoming Missouri-St. Louis to town on Friday and Saturday.
 
 
Game 1 Recap: Maryville took advantage of a Bulldog miscue and plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth in a 5-3 win in the opener.
 
The Saints led 2-0 after two but Truman chipped away when Corban Williams singled in Zak Larkin in the fifth and tied the game in the seventh when an error allowed Kyle Smith to score with two-outs.
 
Two runs scored when Garrett Jones got one past Paul Trenhaile at first in the bottom of the seventh and a triple by Tyler Omlid plated another run in the eighth.
 
Will Nader grounded out to score Blake Deaton in the ninth but Zak Larkin struck out as the tying run at the plate to end the game.
 
Mark Roberts was the only hurler for the Bulldogs, going eight innings and allowing two earned runs but takes the loss.
 
Game 2 Recap: Zak Larkin's clutch two-out single scored Blake Deaton as Truman was down to their final out and Dave Gambino doubled in Tyler Hill for the go ahead run in the eighth as Truman took the nightcap 4-3.
 
Truman led 2-1 after four but the Saints scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
 
In the seventh, Deaton led off with a single and was advanced on a sacrifice to second before going to third on a groundout. Larkin tied the game with a hit but was stranded at third.
 
The Saints loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning but Cody Gardner got two fly outs to end the threat and send it into extra innings.
 
In the eighth, Chris Zrostlik doubled and advanced to third on an error. Tyler Hill pinch ran and scored easily when Gambino doubled.
 
Maryville had second and third with one out again in the bottom of the eighth but Kyle Smith caught a line drive and doubled up the Saints runner to end the game. 
 
Gardner pitched eight innings to pick up the win.
 
Game 3 Recap: The Bulldogs held on for their second straight one-run victory to open play on Saturday.
 
After seeing their 5-0 lead evaporate, the Bulldogs scored three in the sixth off the Maryville relief pitching with Zak Larkin's two RBI single bringing home Will Nader and TJ Wood proving to be the game winner.
 
Tyler Spencer, the third Bulldog pitch in the bottom of the sixth, struck out the first batter he faced with two runners on base and had an uneventful 1-2-3 seventh to notch the save. Chris Allard, in relief of Alex Hoffman, got the win.
 
Corban Williams started things off with a one-out triple in the first and came in on a hit by Paul Trenhaile. The Bulldogs then sent nine hitters to the plate in a four-run second inning with Dave Gambino leading off the inning with a double.
 
The Saints scored two in the fourth and tied the game with in the fifth on a two-run triple off the bat of Sean Murphy.
 
The first four batters in the Bulldog line-up had eight of the 14 hits in the game with Larkin going 2-for-4, Williams 2-for-3 and Trenahile 3-for-3. Gambino, and Will Nader each had a pair of hits as well.
 
Game 4 Recap: The Truman bats really heated up in game two on Saturday busting out 18 hits en route to the 13-3 rout of the Saints in the finale. Corban Williams, Paul Trenhaile and Will Nader each had three hits apiece with Dave Gambino driving in three runs.
 
Sam Reuter pitched five and two-thirds for his second win of the season. Tyler McCreary earned the save tossing the final three and a third with three strikeouts.
 
Scoreless through two, Mike Monfre started the third with a leadoff single. Williams circled the bases on a two-base error that scored Monfre and Nader for the 3-0 lead. Gambino later followed with a single plating Jarod Hahn and Trenhaile for the 5-0 advantage.
 
The Saints got a run back in the fifth but Truman responded with three more in the top of the sixth.
 
Maryville cut two more off the Bulldog lead in the bottom of the sixth but Truman closed the game scoring three in the eighth and two in the ninth for the big win.
