KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - After a slow start in its 2014 home opener, the Truman volleyball team rebounded to hit a collective .459 in the final three sets to earn a 3-1 (21-25, -15, -14, -13) non-conference victory against Illinois Springfield on Wednesday night in Pershing Arena.

Truman (3-2) dropped the first set after UIS (2-2) blasted a blazing .481 in the opening frame to the Bulldogs' .125 mark, as Truman committed seven errors on 32 swings in the first set.

However, from there, the Bulldogs committed a single error in the second set and just two errors in both the third and fourth sets to accelerate past the Prairie Stars. The two teams met as "non-conference" opponents on Wednesday night, with next Saturday's road tussle at UIS serving as the teams' Great Lakes Valley Conference-counting match for the season.

Truman's outside hitters absolutely pummeled the UIS defense, as sophomore Kayla Bastian notched a career-high 23 kills on a .488 hitting line, while senior Allie Brak added a dozen kills and hit .345. Bastian recorded just three kills throughout the first two sets combined before bashing her way to 20 kills on just 23 swings in the final two sets.

Junior Ali Patterson added six kills and two blocks, while senior Meghan Zimmerman came up just short of a triple-double with six kills (.600 hitting), 45 assists, and 11 digs. Junior Abby Heise put away four kills and served two aces, and sophomore Bailey O'Drobinak added five kills and two blocks while hitting .556.

For the match, Truman hit .377 as a team and handed out seven service aces. Defensively, senior Abby Moser led all players with 19 digs, with the Bulldogs out-blocking UIS 7-4.

Nikki Madoch hit .450 with 11 kills to lead the UIS attack.

Truman returns to Pershing Arena this Saturday to kick off Family Weekend, as the Bulldogs welcome Wisconsin-Parkside in a 1 p.m. start.
