Men's Basketball trounces Trojans to open 2015-16 season

ST. LOUIS - - Five Bulldogs reached double-figures offensively, as the Truman men's basketball team kicked off the 2015-16 season with a rout, defeating Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) 97-66 in the Midwest Region Challenge, hosted by Maryville University.

Truman (1-0) hit 36-of-67 field goals (53.7%) and dropped 13 three-pointers on the Trojans (0-1), as the Bulldogs exacted revenge after falling by two to TNU on the opening weekend a season ago. The key run in the game came right at the end of the first half, as Truman – who had a nine point lead sliced to just three with 2:56 to play in the frame – rattled off a 10-0 outburst to take a 46-33 lead into the intermission. Freshman Jake Velky (WAVERLY, Iowa / Waverly-Shell Rock HS) sparked the run, scored eight of the team's 10 points during the final two and a half minutes of the half.

The lead would never drop below double-digits, as a lay-up by junior forward Connor Erickson (OVERLAND PARK, Kan. / Blue Valley North HS) with 9:31 to play gave Truman its first 20-point lead of the season at 76-56. The lead hit its peak with just 26 seconds to play when Velky knocked down the Bulldogs' 13th three-ball of the game for the 97-66 final.

Two returners set new career-highs in points, as senior guard Cole Myers (ANKENY, Iowa / Ankeny HS) hit 8-of-14 field goals (4-of-8 three-pointers) and a pair of free throws to lead all scorers with 22 points. Junior forward Billy Daniel (DAVENPORT, Iowa / Assumption HS) also netted a new career-best, finishing with 16 points behind 7-of-9 shooting and two free throws. Junior guard Kyle Kanaskie (STATE COLLEGE, Pa. / State College HS) and Erickson poured in 14 points each, with Velky totaling 13 points and five rebounds in his collegiate debut.

Kanaskie and junior guard Cory Myers (ANKENY, Iowa / Ankeny HS) each finished with a team-high six assists, as the Bulldogs handed out 19 helpers with just 11 turnovers on the day.

TNU shot 48.3% overall from the floor but connected on just 2-of-15 three-point tries. The Bulldog bench out-scored the Trojans' second-string, 39-10, while Truman turned 14 TNU miscues into 18 second-chance points.

The Bulldogs will face Ohio Dominican tomorrow at 3 p.m. in St. Louis to close the Midwest Region Challenge.
