EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – Five runs between the seventh and eighth innings lifted the Truman Bulldogs to a 7-5 victory over sixth-ranked and defending National Champion Southern Indiana on Saturday night in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both schools. The teams return to the diamond for a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 after one but got single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game. In the fifth, Brendan Trimble scored on a throwing error on a fielder's choice by T.J. Wood and Truman had the bases loaded with one out but Jarod Hahn flied out and Paul Trenhaile struck out swinging.

In the sixth, Dave Gambino led off with a double and would come around on a two-out double by Chris Illiopoulos.

The Screaming Eagles got the lead back in the bottom of the sixth on a sac fly.

Moving to the seventh, Wood led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Zak Larkin singled moving Wood up to third and Larkin would steal second following a strikeout of Hahn.

Trenhaile walked to load the bases and after a pitching change, Gambino delivered with an infield hit tying the game at three. Blake Deaton lined out to left that scored Larkin to put Truman on top but Trenhaile was out on the play.

Andrew Range relieved Mark Roberts in the bottom of the inning and gave up a pair of hits but got Matt Chavarria to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Bulldogs rode the momentum of the twin killing in the eighth by scoring three times after the first two hitters were retired. Wyatt Fones reached on an error then Wood doubled to left center scoring Fones and going all the way to third on another USI error. Larkin singled scoring Wood and Hahn doubled to right bringing in Larkin to make it 7-3.

Range retired USI in order in the eighth and Truman stranded a pair in the ninth.

The Screaming Eagles didn't go quietly in the bottom of the ninth however. A leadoff walk and double put the first two hitters on and following a foul out, Kyle Kempf singled in a run that also put the tying run at the plate. Another single trimmed the Bulldog lead to two and brought the winning run to the dish.

Chavarria, who hit a two-run homer in the first but grounded into the key double play in the seventh faced Range again with the game on the line. Range won the battle and got Chavarria to ground into the 6-4-3 preserving the Bulldog win.

Range got his first save pitching the final three innings and Roberts moved to 2-0 after going six with five strikeouts.

The Bulldogs had 12 hits with Larkin, Trenhaile, Gambino and Wood each collecting two. Truman stranded 10 on base.

USI committed six errors, had 13 hits and left seven on base.

The two teams will continue the series with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. and finish with a single game on Monday at noon.
