KIRKSVILLE, Mo.  – On a blustery day in Kirksville, both Truman and Rockhurst suffered bitter defeats as the two teams split the first day of the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday. Truman got a walk-off win in the opener 5-4 in extra innings while the Hawks tallied 10 runs in the final two innings to steal game two 11-6.

Ninth-hitter David Stober had a big first day for Rockhurst. Stober was 5-of-9 from the dish with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. As a team, Rockhurst hit .351 on the day.

Truman's Paul Trenhaile got a pair of hits in the opener to tie the Bulldog all-time hits record at 197 but had his 24-game hitting streak snapped in the nightcap. T.J. Wood had four hits on the day with a double and Truman hit .294.

The teams will resume their series with a pair of games starting at noon on Saturday.

Game 1 Recap: Déjà vu for the Bulldogs as Jarod Hahn laid down the perfect safety squeeze and Truman won 5-4 in 10 innings to take the opener. It was the exact same play the Bulldogs had won with against Quincy on Wednesday afternoon.

Rockhurst struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning. Caleb Baker hit a one-out double down the left field line and Matt Stacks chased Baker and Brett Marr home with a double. Blake Petersen got a two-out single to right to make it 3-0.

Truman got a pair back in the second on a two-run double by Zak Larkin.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth when Kyle Smith scored on Trenhaile's record-tying infield single. The hit was the 197th of his career tying him with Devon Myers for the all-time Truman lead. The Bulldogs stranded two on base to end the inning.

David Stober led off the seventh with a solo home run to left but Truman knotted things up in the eighth. Chris Iliopoulos hit a double to the fence in right center and Tyler Hill pinch ran for him. Hill went to third on a wild pitch but the throw sailed into left field allowing Hill to come around and score.

Matt Tometz made his Bulldog debut and got two outs before Calin McCourt doubled to make it second and third. Peter Young was called upon and got the final out of the inning.

Truman loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but Josh DeRouse struck out swinging to send the game to extras.

Young worked around a two-out double by Stober in the 10th. T.J. Wood singled with one out for Truman and moved to third on a single by Smith. Hahn perfected the safety squeeze, dragging the bunt down the first base line and the throw by Corbin Hare was not in time for Wood to score.

Mark Roberts got a no decision after throwing eight innings for the Bulldogs and Young picked up his first win of the year pitching an inning and a third.

Game 2 Recap: The Bulldogs led 6-1 after five innings but couldn't close the door allowing the Hawks to earn the split. Rockhurst scored four times in the sixth and six times in the seventh to win 11-6.

Caleb Baker singled to center to score the first run of the game for Rockhurst in the third and the Bulldogs responded as Chris Iliopoulos grounded out in the fourth scoring Blake Deaton.

Truman exploded for five runs in the fifth as Kyle Smith singled and T.J. Wood doubled. Jarod Hahn walked on four straight pitches to load the bases but Paul Trenhaile struck out swinging for the first out.

Dave Gambino shot a ball down the right field line to clear the bases with a triple. Blake Deaton followed and belted his first home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 6-1.

Rockhurst got a pair back quickly on a two-run homer by Brett Marr in the top of the sixth but after two outs a pair of singles put runners at first and second. Jeremy Lufft grounded to third and after a bobble, Brendan Trimble rushed the throw to first that sailed wide allowing another run to score. David Stober added an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-5.

Austin Tinsley relieved Alex Hoffmann in the seventh and hit the first batter he faced then walked Marr on four straight. Peter Young went to the mound and got the first out but Calin McCourt hit one off the legs of Trimble at third allowing the tying run to score. Stober then broke the game open with a three-run drive to left center as Rockhurst scored six times on three hits in the inning.

Thomas Cargile was the winner pitching two and two-thirds of relief work and Tinsley fell to 0-4 on the season.
