Bulldogs Lead Wire to Wire in Thursday Night Victory

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman men's basketball team scored on the first possession of the game and never found itself in any trouble on Thursday night, as the Bulldogs built a 25 point halftime lead and cruised to an 84-62 victory against McKendree in Gen. John J. Pershing Arena.
 
Truman (11-3, 3-1 GLVC) scored the first seven points of the contest, forcing a timeout by the visiting Bearcats (7-4, 0-3 GLVC) less than 80 seconds into the game. After McKendree drew to within two at 7-5, the Bulldogs scored 14 in a row to build a 21-5 lead at the 11:27 mark of the first half. The lead would reach 20 at 29-9 just moments later, with the half's high water mark cresting at 42-16 on a layup by junior guard Dwight Sistrunk, Jr. From there, a 45-20 halftime lead ballooned to as many as 33 – 74-41 – with 8:00 minutes to play, before the Bearcat starters outscored Truman's bench down the stretch for the 22-point final margin.
 
With the game in hand early, the Bulldogs were able to share the minutes on the first game of the weekend set, as all 11 players in the scorebook played at least seven minutes of action. Junior forward Connor Erickson scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 16 minutes of work, while freshman guard Jake Velky came off the bench to pour in 14 points and grab five rebounds. Junior guard Cory Myers scored 11 points and added four assists and three steals, with Sistrunk Jr. capping his 26-minute night with 10 points, eight assists, six rebounds, and two steals with just one turnover.
 
The Bulldogs shot 50.7% (34-of-67) from the floor for the game, hitting 10-of-27 (37.0%) of its three-point tries. Truman out-scored McKendree 46-24 in the paint, with the Bulldogs also turning 16 Bearcat miscues into 16 points offensively.
 
David Franklin led McKendree with 23 points and nine rebounds in 37 minutes of action.
 
Truman will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Illinois Springfield in Kirksville. The Prairie Stars fell to 6-7 overall (0-3 GLVC) with a 93-82 loss at Quincy on Thursday night.
