Season Stats

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman State University men's basketball team shot just 38% in the first half and couldn't overcome a nine-point deficit at the break, as Lewis University handed the Bulldogs an 84-70 defeat in General John J. Pershing Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (17-8, 9-6 GLVC) and Flyers (18-7, 10-5 GLVC) had Saturday's battle decided in a handful of runs, as, after Lewis took a 2-0 lead on the opening possession, Truman rattled off a 12-0 spurt to take a 12-2 lead and force a Flyer timeout. However, the Flyers then put on a 20-2 run that spanned nine-plus minutes, as it took a three-pointer by freshman Jake Velky to cut the Lewis lead to five at 22-17 with 6:12 to play in the first half. After the teams traded buckets, it was Truman's turn for a run, as the Bulldogs scored eight in a row to even the score at 25-all with 3:45 on the clock.

But Lewis landed what proved to be the final blow, as the Flyers spanned the halftime intermission with a 16-3 run, taking a 41-28 lead with 19:29 to play in the game. Truman cut the lead under double-figures just three more times – getting to within nine as late as 2:20 to go, but Lewis found an answer each time to take a one-game lead in the full standings against the 'Dogs after Saturday's game.

On Senior Day, the Bulldogs got top efforts from its two senior starters, as Andrew Vander Zwaag scored a team-high 16 points, while Cole Myers added a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double. Velky poured in 10 points off the bench as the third Bulldog to score in double-figures, with junior Billy Daniel adding nine points and a pair of rebounds. Juniors Cory Myers and Kyle Kanaskie combined for 14 points and 11 assists, while junior Dwight Sistrunk, Jr., led all players with three steals.

Truman shot 47% from the floor for the game but connected on just 10-of-30 from three-point range. The Flyers out-rebounded Truman 38-25 overall, getting 16 second-chance points to just three for Truman. The Flyers received a 24-point game from Miles Simelton, while Delaney Blaylock added a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double of his own.

The Bulldogs will close out the home portion of the regular season slate this coming Thursday (Feb. 18) when they host William Jewell at 7:30 p.m. in Pershing Arena.
