Maryville Takes Both Ends Of Day One Doubleheader

ST. LOUIS  – The Maryville Saints came out of the gates early and then used late inning heroics to take the first two games of their four-game series over the Truman Bulldogs on Saturday. The Saints won the opener 14-7 and walked off to win the nightcap 4-3. The series resumes on Sunday.
 
 
Game 1 Recap:
The Bulldogs could not overcome a tough start to the Saints in the opener as Maryville plated six runs in the first two innings and doubled up the 'Dogs 14-7.
 
Zack ruckman went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBIs in the first game. Ruckman singled and scored in the two-run first and knocked in a pair of runs with an RBI single in the second to give Maryville a 4-0 lead.
 
The bottom trio of the Truman lineup reached and scored in the third as Truman cut the lead in half but Maryville added another run in their half of the frame.
 
The two teams exchanged runs in the sixth with Nick Agliolo scoring for the 'Dogs. However, Maryville busted things open with a five-run seventh.
 
Mason King tripled and scored in Truman's two-run eighth inning and Wyatt Fones doubled and scored in the ninth. Fones went 2-for-4.
 
Tyler Omlid went seven strong innings for Maryville allowing three hits and four unearned runs. Mark Roberts took the loss as he lasted only the first inning.  
 
 
Game 2 Recap:
Pinch hitter Yoonjae Nam's single in the bottom of the seventh capped of a two-run walk off win for the Saints 4-3.
 
Maryville led 2-1 after four but the Bulldogs battled back with an RBI single by Brendan Trimble to tie the game in the fifth and Adam Gregorich scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to give the Bulldogs the lead.
 
Kent Frantz was looking to go the distance as he struck out seven in the first six innings but gave up a leadoff double to Tyler Catlett and a single to Tyler Omlid to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
 
The Saints pulled even on a sac bunt from pinch hitter Daniel Covert to bring up another pinch hitter in Nam.
 
Frantz falls to 2-4 on the season and Justin Laffleaur picked up the win in relief for Maryville.
 
 
Doubleheader Notes:
  • Dave Gambino and Wyatt Fones each hit .500 on the afternoon with Gambino collecting four hits in eight at bats.
  • As a team, Truman hit .250 on the day while Maryville hit .352.
  • Nick Agliolo and Mason King added to Truman's stolen bases totals with two and one respectively.
  • Fones, Brendan Trimble and King had the three extra base hits for Truman.
  • Maryville had a .451 on-base percentage for the two games as Truman pitching walked a dozen.
  • Zack Ruckman was 5-for-8 with four runs scored and four RBIs to lead Maryville in the sweep.
  • Tyler Catlett and Louis Niemerg also had four hits apiece for the Saints.
  • It is the first time in three conference weekends that Truman has lost a game on day one let alone swept in the doubleheader.
