RECAP: Truman Hosts Quincy on Senior Day

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - On the final day of its 2019 regular season, the Truman State University softball team hosted Quincy, but had its Senior Day festivities spoiled by the visitors. The Hawks swept the Bulldogs for the first time since 2010 and did so with a score of 5-4 in both games.

After winning 12 of 14 games, Truman (28-15, 14-12 GLVC) will head into next week's GLVC Tournament on a three-game losing streak, its longest since early in the month. On the other side, Quincy (25-23, 11-15 GLVC), winner of seven games in a row, climbed back into tourney berth contention with Saturday's sweep. The Bulldogs and Hawks have played all 26 of their league games, but the league's other 12 teams still have a doubleheader left on Sunday with two of the eight seeds still up for grabs.

As for Truman's seed, it's still up in the air a bit, but could be the five, six or seven. If Drury loses at least one tomorrow, Truman is at least the six seed. If Illinois Springfield loses at least one, Truman will be the five. If UIS wins both and Drury wins both, Truman will fall to the seven. Quarterfinal play would take place on Thursday, May 2 at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill.

In game one on Saturday, Truman led 3-1 after three innings before Quincy outscored the Bulldogs 5-1 over the final four frames. Truman out-hit Quincy 13-8 and had four players with multiple hits, but the Bulldogs' one error cost them dearly. In the top of the seventh with the bases empty and two outs recorded, Quincy's Courtney Kernich reached first on a throwing error by Alyssa Rivera at third. Three hits later, two runs had scored and the Hawks had a 5-4 lead.

Alyssa Hajduk (13-5) pitched all seven innings but took the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Quincy scored four runs before Truman could even send its first batter to the plate. After that, the Bulldogs outscored the Hawks 4-1, but it was too little, too late as the away team pulled off the sweep. Lauren Dale (14-9) was handed the loss after she surrendered five runs, four earned, on nine hits with three free passes and two punchouts.

Following both games, the program honored its six seniors in Christa Reisinger, Dale, Morgan McMahan, Brooke VunCannon, Michaela Mooney, and Sydney Scherzinger. The doubleheader also marked the final home games in head coach, Erin Brown's career. Those six seniors and Brown will play in their final GLVC Tournament next week.
