RECAP: Softball Battles To A 1-1 Record On Monday

CLEARMONT, Fla. – The Bulldog Softball team split their penultimate day of their spring break trip by dropping the opener to Winona State 5-1 before winning the nightcap in extra innings 1-0 over Ohio Dominican.

Truman will wrap up their Florida trip with a clash with the defending NCAA Division II champion and ranked number one currently in Augustana (S.D.) at 1:30 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. game against Indiana (Pa.).

Winona State Box Score
The Bulldogs were limited to only three hits in a 5-1 loss to Winona State in the opener on Monday.

The Warriors (7-5) scored single runs in the first and second innings then tacked on two in the fifth to lead 4-0.

Truman loaded the bases in their half of the sixth after Cameryn Patterson was hit by a pitch and both McKenzie West and Emma Walbert both singled to left. Alyssa Rivera followed with another hit towards left field that scored Patterson from third.

Winona got the run back in their half of the sixth on a one-out solo home run.

Ohio Dominican Box Score
Kayla Quanstrum's RBI single in the eighth inning scored Callie Unrein in a 1-0 extra inning victory for the Bulldogs.

Alyssa Hajduk stranded a leadoff double to start the game and struck out nine while going the distance plus an inning for her second win of the season. Hajduk retired 13 straight hitters after ODU had first and second with one out in the first.

The Panthers would get a walk in the fifth that was left on base and their second hit of the game came in the top of the seventh and was also stranded at second.

The Bulldogs had all sorts of runners throughout the game but missed out on key hits to score runs. Truman left the bases loaded in the first, had runners at second and third with one out in the third, loaded the bases again in the fifth and had players in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but came up empty each time.

The teams played the international tie break rules that placed a runner on second to start the eighth inning. ODU sacrificed the runner to third but the next batter grounded to Rivera at third who fired home to Taylor Spencer to punch out the runner at the plate. Hajduk got the fly ball to end the inning.

Truman's eighth had Unrein at second, who was promptly moved over by Spencer on the bunt. Quanstrum followed and delivered the single to center to end the game.

Quanstrum was 2-for-3 while McKenzie West and Emma Walbert each had two hits as well. Truman stranded 14 runners on base through seven innings.
