RECAP: Softball Splits Conference DH With Maryville

ST. LOUIS – The Truman Softball team took the opener 5-3 over the Maryville Saints but dropped the nightcap 8-0 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill on Tuesday in St. Louis.

In the opener, Cameryn Patterson drove in the first two runs of the game, Ellie Weltha began her Bulldog softball career with two RBIs and Kayla Quanstrum went 3-for-3 in a 5-3 victory for Truman.

Patterson doubled in Maria McGonegle for a 1-0 lead in the third and earned the RBI the hard way in the fourth as a pitch hit her with the bases loaded.  Weltha, who on Saturday completed her Truman Basketball season named to the NCAA Midwest Regional team, pinch hit and delivered a two-run single to right scoring McGonegle and Emily Eberwine for a 4-0 Bulldog lead.

Mackayla Gordon followed with a groundout RBI to score Patterson and Truman led 5-0.

The lead was safe until the seventh when Maryville started things off with a leadoff walk. That runner would score following an error at first. A second error in the frame allowed another runner to cross the plate. A two-out single to right made it 5-3 to bring up the tying run to the dish, however catcher Taylor Spencer threw out the base runner trying to swipe second to end the game.

Rachael Kernich struck out five and allowed three hits and three unearned runs to pick up her first win of the season. She had allowed only one hit through the first six innings.

Unfortunately, for Truman the errors carried over into the first inning of game two as Maryville scored three unearned runs in the first to take the second game

With two on and one out, a double-steal attempt by Maryville resulted in a throwing error allowing the first of the three runs to touch the plate. A triple and sac fly scored the other two runs.

Maryville extended their lead 4-0 with a solo run in the fourth and scored three more in the fifth and one in the sixth to win by run-rule 8-0.
Alyssa Callans struck out nine, walked one and allowed three hits in picking up the complete game shutout for the Saints.

Truman will host Lindenwood University on Saturday and the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday.
