Bulldog Softball Drops Pair At Maryville

ST. LOUIS – The Truman State Softball team suffered a pair of losses to Maryville University on Monday. The Bulldogs fell 7-6 in game one and 5-1 in game two. They will return to the Gateway City this upcoming weekend with conference doubleheaders against Missouri-St. Louis and Lindenwood.

The games were originally slated to be played in Kirksville on Friday but weather conditions forced the date and venue change. Truman played as the home team in each game.

Game 1 – Maryville 7, Truman State 6
The opener was a slugfest with the Saints holding on at the end for a 7-6 victory. Both teams scored runs in the first on RBI doubles. Maryville's was an unearned run while Cameryn Patterson drove in Emma Walbert to knot things up.

The Saints picked up three runs in the third with two coming on an RBI double and another on a wild pitch. Truman fired back with two of their own. Lauren Stade singled in Callie Unrein and later scored on a double by Shelby Webster.

An infield single gave Maryville a 5-3 lead in their half of the fifth while Truman answered right back with a run scoring triple by Unrein that brought Walbert all the way around the bases.

An errant throw trying to get a runner stealing third allowed Maryville to score again in the sixth and later a double with two outs scored what proved to be the game-winning run.

Webster was hit by a pitch to start Truman's sixth inning. Ellie Weltha followed with her first home run of the season and capped off a 3-for-3 first game brought Truman back to within one at 7-6. However, the Bulldogs went quietly in the bottom of the seventh to fall.

Annabel Zimmer tossed the complete game for the Bulldogs and struck out seven.

Game 2 – Maryville 5, Truman State 1
The reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Week, Emersen Heron of Maryville, allowed just three hits and fanned nine Bulldog hitters in picking up the complete game 5-1 win.

The Saints drew first with an RBI double in the second and added three in the fourth. An infield single scored the first run followed with a two-run single to left center to make it 4-0. Maryville pushed across a single run in the fifth on a foul out to right field.

Truman got their first hit in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff single by Walbert and after stealing second was left stranded.

In the seventh, Unrein doubled to start the inning and scored on a single by Stade.

Nicole Havel went the distance for Truman allowing five runs on eight hits.
