Soccer Falls to Quincy in Season Debut

Box Score

QUINCY, Ill. - - A pair of goals late in each half spurred the Quincy men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory against Truman on Saturday night at the Quincy Bowl.

The Bulldogs (0-1) had a handful of chances early on, but after Drew Garrone (Chesterfield, Mo., Lafayette) stopped a QU (1-0) penalty kick in the 38th minute, the Hawks got on the board just two minutes later on Ethan Venvertloh's tally in the 40th.

The teams played evenly for the next 35 minutes before Quincy tacked on an insurance mark, getting a goal in the 77th minute off the foot of Jeff Vaninger to reach the 2-0 final. Ryan Seifert assisted both Hawk goals.

The Bulldogs took 11 shots, putting three on target, but couldn't find the back of the net in their 2012 opener. Andy Chapman (St. Louis, Mo., Fort Zumwalt South) had two shots on goal, and Charlie Backus (St. Louis, Mo., CBC) added one, while Garrone made six saves in net.

Truman faces Missouri S&T on Sunday at 5:00 pm in Quincy. The Miners are 0-0-1 after a scoreless draw with Lindenwood on Saturday.
