Historic Season Continues:
After a span of 51 years and 1,874 baseball games as Northeast Missouri State/Truman State University, the Bulldogs will be playing their first games in an NCAA Championship Tournament. Truman will face William Jewell on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the NCAA Midwest Regional.

The six-team double-elimination tournament will crown the regional champion and send the winner to the NCAA Division II College World Series to be held in Cary, North Carolina.

The NCAA Tournament is made up of 48 teams, playing in eight regional sites with each regional winner advancing to Cary for a chance at the national title. The Midwest Region champion last season, the University of Southern Indiana, went on to win the national championship over Tampa (Fla.).

The Bulldogs and Cardinals, both making their first trip to the regional, are joined by top-seed Quincy (Ill.) Hawks, #2 Grand Valley (Mich.) State Lakers, #5 Drury (Mo.) Panthers and #6 Ashland (Ohio) Eagles.

Bulldogs/Cardinals Opening Game:
The two teams will meet for the fifth time this season and ninth time over the last two years. Truman and William Jewell split in Liberty back in March with the Cardinals winning two games on walk-off runs while Truman won the two seven-inning games.

In game one, Truman pounded out 13 hits off of starter Austin Kretchmar and led 3-0 after seven innings. The Cardinals scored all of their runs via the long ball. Hunter Brown hit a two-run shot in the eighth and Luke Lucchetti won the game with a two-run homer in the ninth. Mark Roberts pitched eight innings for Truman allowing six hits and striking out five. T.J. Wood was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Game two saw the Bulldogs come back from a three-run deficit with two in the fourth and a four-run fifth to win 6-5. Cody Gardner went the distance for Truman and Nick Farleigh did so for the Cardinals. Jarod Hahn, Dave Gambino, Blake Deaton and T.J. Wood all had doubles with Gambino adding a two-run triple.

Jarod Hahn hit a pair of home runs and Kent Frantz picked up his fifth straight win in a 6-4 win in game three. Hahn hit two and Dave Gambino added another in the seventh as an insurance run. Frantz pitched six and a third and Austin Tinsley earned the save getting the final two outs. Preston Felgate tossed four innings and Chris Mancha pitched the final three to take the loss.

The finale saw the Cardinals rally with three runs in the final two innings to win 5-4. The Bulldogs led 4-2 on back-to-back homers from Jarod Hahn and Paul Trenhaile but Luke Lucchetti's solo shot in the eighth sparked the comeback. Bryan Rezin tied the game with an RBI single and Brian Porting won the game on a fielder's choice. Starters Alex Hoffmann and Billy Kirkpatrick both went six innings. Austin Tinsley took the loss and Dylan Pollock got the win. Pollock pitched the final three innings, allowing one hit and striking out five.

For the series, Paul Trenhaile hit .500 with four runs scored and a .529 on-base percentage. The Bulldogs hit five home runs in the four games with Jarod Hahn belting three and driving in five. Truman hit .344 for the series.

Luke Lucchetti earned the GLVC Hitter of the Week after going 8-of-11 (.727) with a double, triple and two home runs. Lucchetti drove in seven of the Cardinals 19 runs scored and had a 1.535 slugging percentage and a .692 on-base percentage during the series.

In the eight games played between the two teams over the past two years, five games have been decided by one run and the other three decided by no more than three.

What Happens Next:
A win by the Bulldogs will send them to the 7 p.m. Friday night game against the winner of the Grand Valley State/Drury game. A loss by the Bulldogs will pit them against the winner of the Quincy/Ashland contest at 3 p.m., also on Friday.

Truman is 2-3 against Quincy this year and lost to the Hawks in the GLVC Tournament last week 6-4. They are 2-2 against Drury this season with all four games played in Springfield. They have never faced Ashland or Grand Valley State.

Records Watch:
The Bulldogs have already shattered the school record for wins this year with 31. The previous high was last year with 26 and before that 21 in 1999. It is first time Truman will finish a season above the .500 mark since 1982 (17-12).

As a team, Truman has broken school records in hits (490), doubles (80), RBIs (252), Total Bases (651) and Saves (10). The .299 batting average is third best in single-season history, they are seven runs shy of tying the record of 292 from last year and currently has the best fielding percentage of any Bulldog squad a .968. The previous best was .961 in 2014.

Individual offensive season records, Paul Trenhaile broke his hits record from last year. Trenhaile has 75 this year after 71 in 2014. Dave Gambino has 67 which is third best.  Gambino is one triple away from tying the record with five. Trenhaile and Jarod Hahn is tied for third in runs scored with 42, seven away from tying the record. Zak Larkin is fifth.

Trenhaile and Hahn are both in the top 10 in RBIs. Trenhaile's 43 are third and Hahn's 39 are tied for sixth. The record is 50 held by Tony Vandemore in 1999.

Larkin's 24 stolen bases are fourth in a season, 11 off the school record held by Corbin Williams and six away from his 31 last year.

Individual pitching records look like this. Kent Frantz and Cody Gardner are tied with Jeff Birdsong's 1999 record of eight wins on the hill. Peter Young is tied with Dan Hillen (2005) and Doug Pisarek (1986) mark of five saves in a season.

Gardner needs six and a third innings pitched to tie the single-season mark of 93.1 set by Birdsong in 1999.
