RECAP: Softball Takes Down Conference Leader In Doubleheader Split

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Softball team put the first blemish on the GLVC conference leader Lindenwood on Saturday by splitting a pair of games by scores of 1-0 and 6-3. The Lions took the first in eight innings while Truman used a big third inning for their win. Truman returns to action on Sunday against Missouri-St. Louis at 1 p.m.
 
Truman starter Rachel Kernich retired the first 15 Lindenwood hitters to start the doubleheader. A short pop fly that landed in front of the second baseman, Cameryn Patterson broke up the perfect game in the sixth but the Lions stranded a pair of runs to leave the game scoreless.
 
McKenzie West singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but was stranded to send the game into extra innings.
 
Ceairra Perez led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base. Hannah Johnson singled to center field to score Perez and the eventual winning run.
 
Truman put runs at first and second in their half of the eighth with one out but a fly out to short center and a pop up to short ended the game.
 
Kernich allowed only four hits and struck out two with 15 ground ball outs but was tagged with the loss.
Amanda Weyh also allowed only four hits and fanned seven for Lindenwood to improve to 3-1.
 
Game two saw the Bulldogs break out with a big fourth inning and add some key insurance runs late for the 6-3 winner.
 
After a leadoff walk, Kayla Quanstrum and Emma Walbert each singled. Maria Mcgonegle was a strikeout victim for the second out by Patterson picked her up by drilling a ball to the fence in left center to score the runners.
 
Ellie Weltha stepped in and crushed her first Truman home run over the left field fence to make it 4-0.
 
The Lions would chip away as they got a run back in the fourth and two in the fifth to make it 4-3.
 
A pinch-hit single by Shelby Webster with two outs in the fifth scored Walbert got her third hit of the game to make it 5-3; however, Truman left the bases loaded.
 
Breianna Klein, who relieved Annabel Zimmer in the fifth, retired the Lions in order in the sixth and Walbert got a key two-out single to left to plate Emily Eberwine for a 6-3 lead.
 
Klein put the Lions down quietly in the seventh for her second save of the season and to preserve the third win for Zimmer.
 
The Bulldogs moved to 5-11 and 2-4 in the GLVC while the Lions dropped to 10-2-1 and 5-1 in the conference.
