First Pitch:
Conference season begins with the Truman Bulldogs squaring off against the reigning Division II National Champions, the University of Southern Indiana for a weekend series in Evansville. The teams were scheduled to play a four-game series with a single game on Friday, doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. With the weather forecast, that has been changed to doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, with Monday as a possible back-up date.

The Bulldogs are 7-2 overall after going 3-1 against Illinois Springfield last weekend and dropping a Division I game 10-2 to the University of Missouri on Tuesday night. The Screaming Eagles have had a horrendous start to their title defense due to weather. USI is 3-3 with eight games washed out. They went 1-2 against #1 Tampa in the opening weekend then dropped a 7-5 decision to Oakland City (Ind.) on Monday. They defeated Notre Dame (Ohio) on Wednesday by scores of 6-5 and 6-0.

In The Polls:
Truman is third in the Midwest Region according to D2BaseballNews.com and eighth in the region in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The Bulldogs are not ranked in the national polls for either sites.

Southern Indiana is first in both the D2BaseballNews.com and the NCBWA poll. They are tied for seventh in the NCBWA national poll and fourth in the D2BaseballNews.com survey.

Gambino/Frantz Earns Player of Week Honors:
Truman swept this week's GLVC Player of the Week honors with Dave Gambino and Kent Frantz earning the league awards. Gambino hit .714 (10-of-14) with two doubles, a triple, home run and six RBIs in Truman's series win over Illinois Springfield last weekend. Frantz pitched the Bulldogs to the series win with a complete-game shutout in the finale. Frantz fanned eight Prairie Star hitters and walked none while allowing four hits.

It was the first time in program history that Truman swept both the hitter and pitcher conference player of the week awards in the same week. Gambino and Frantz join Blake Deaton on the honor roll this year in GLVC award winners.

A Look Inside Stats:
As league play gets underway this weekend, Truman has posted a .282 team batting average through nine games and are second in the conference with 15-of-17 stolen base attempts. Pitching, the Bulldogs have a 3.64 ERA with 41 strikeouts to 26 walks.

Individually, Dave Gambino is leading the league in batting average with a .543 mark. Gambino is third in RBIs with 13 while Jarod Hahn leads in runs scored with 12.

National statistics have not been updated yet due to issues with the NCAA.

Beep Beep:
After setting a school record last season with 118 stolen bases, the Bulldogs picked right up where they left off, Truman is 15-of-17 in the stolen bases this year with career leader Zak Larkin adding five to his record setting total of 65.

Defense Wins Championships:
Truman posted a .958 fielding percentage through nine games. Shortstop Blake Deaton leads the team with 39 assists and Paul Trenhaile added to his career leading putout total with 57. Trenhaile is the Bulldog leader in chances (1,270) and putouts (1,179). Zak Larkin has 19 assists to bolster his total to 338, which is fifth on the all-time assists charts. He needs five more to pass Brad Busch for fourth.

The Bulldog catchers have thrown out six of a potential 12 base stealers during the season.

Pitching Prowess:
All four starting pitchers have averaged over six innings a game and are 6-0 this season. Kent Frantz and Mark Roberts have sub 2.00 ERAs. Frantz has a 1.38 ERA in 13 innings with 12 strikeouts while Roberts has a 1.93 ERA in 14 innings. Cody Gardner is 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA and has pitched two complete games. Alex Hoffmann is 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA in 13 innings pitched.

Out of the bullpen, Andrew Range has three appearances and a 1-0 record. Austin Tinsley has four appearances and two saves.

Vs. Cancer Foundation:
The Bulldogs have joined with the Vs-Cancer Foundation to raise money to cure kids' cancer. They have raised $3165 dollars and are ranked 24 out of 61 teams during the challenge. The team goal is $5000 dollars. For more information or to donate visit: https://team.vs-cancer.org/fundraise/team?ftid=38051

Records Watch:
Paul Trenhaile is already the Truman career leader in total chances (1,270) and putouts (1,179). At the plate, Trenhaile is 27 hits away from the Truman career hits record of 197 and is 28 RBIs away from the top of that stat category.

Larkin is the king of career stolen bases at Truman with 65 and is in the Truman top 10 in runs scored, walks and assists.

About the USI Screaming Eagles:
Enter the series with a 3-3 overall record…lost on Monday to Oakland City 7-5, then swept Notre Dame (Ohio) on Wednesday…have lost eight games due to weather…started the season going 1-2 against #1 Tampa on the road…Matt Chavarria leads team with a .476 batting average in five games with eight RBIs…team is hitting .254 with four home runs…opponents are batting .310 against the Screaming Eagles…USI has committed 15 errors in five games for a .926 fielding percentage.

Bulldogs Picked Fourth in GLVC West Preseason Poll:
The GLVC Coaches Poll was released on February 4 with defending national champion Southern Indiana and Quincy (Ill.) picked to win their respective divisions. Southern Indiana sits atop the East Division picking up 14 of 16 first-place votes while Quincy was in a dead heat with Drury (Mo.) for the top spot in the west. The Hawks totaled 113 points to Drury's 112 with each school splitting the eight first-place votes.

The Bulldogs were in a similar heat with Missouri-St. Louis with the Tritons getting the edge and the number three spot in the west with 79 points to Truman's 77.

Truman will play all seven GLVC West Division opponents – William Jewell (Road March 28-29), Rockhurst (Home April 3-4), Drury (Road April 10-12), Missouri S&T (Home April 18-19), Missouri-St. Louis (Road April 25-26), Maryville (Home May 1-3) and Quincy (Home April 1; Road April 14).
