The 2003 Truman State University Women's Swimming Team elevated an emerging dynasty into one of the most dominant stretches in NCAA Division II history. In its first season under head coach Colleen Murphy, Truman captured its third consecutive NCAA Division II National Championship, won nine national titles, shattered NCAA records, and achieved the largest margin of victory in Division II Women’s Swimming Championship history.
Following national championships in 2001 and 2002, the Bulldogs faced the challenge of maintaining their position atop Division II swimming after the departure of longtime coach Seth Huston. Murphy, who had previously served as an assistant coach during Truman's rise to national prominence, seamlessly guided the program to even greater heights. The Bulldogs entered the NCAA Championships in Grand Forks, North Dakota, with the maximum allowable roster of 18 competitors and delivered one of the most complete team performances ever assembled.
Truman amassed 682 points, finishing 272 points ahead of runner-up Drury (410), establishing the largest margin of victory in NCAA Division II Women's Swimming Championship history at the time. The Bulldogs' depth was unmatched, as all 18 members of Truman's national championship squad earned All-America honors by placing among the top 16 in at least one event.
Senior standouts Kelli Dudley and Liz Hug led the charge. Dudley captured national championships in the 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard backstroke while earning runner-up finishes in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Her NCAA-record performance of 4:20.67 in the 400 IM established a new Division II standard and lowered her own school record by more than three seconds. Hug added national championships in the 200 individual medley and 1,000 freestyle while finishing second in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 200 freestyle.
Sophomore Diana Betsworth added another national title to her growing resume by winning the 500 freestyle. The defending national champion in the 200, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyles also finished second in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 1,000 freestyle. Along with Hug and junior Katie May, Betsworth helped Truman sweep the top three positions in the 1,000 freestyle.
The Bulldogs dominated relay competition, winning four of five relay events. National championships came in the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay, 400-yard freestyle relay and 800-yard freestyle relay. Three of those relay teams established new NCAA Division II records, while the 200-yard freestyle relay finished runner-up with a school-record time.
Truman's success extended throughout the roster. Sarah Dance earned four individual All-America finishes and swam on two national champion relay teams. Michaela Osborn posted top-seven finishes in both breaststroke events while contributing to two NCAA-record relay victories. Sara Hatcher concluded an outstanding career with a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle, a sixth-place finish in the 100 freestyle, and four relay All-America performances. Katie May captured a national championship as part of the 800 freestyle relay while earning All-America honors in both distance freestyle events.
For her leadership, Murphy was named NCAA Division II Women's Coach of the Year, extending a remarkable streak of national coaching honors for the Truman program. By season's end, the Bulldogs had broken four NCAA Division II records, established 11 school records, and captured nine national championships.
The team also excelled academically. Multiple Bulldogs earned CSCAA Academic All-America honors, Sarah Dance was named an MIAA Presidential Scholar and Verizon Academic All-America First Team selection, and numerous student-athletes were recognized as Academic All-MIAA performers.
From a fourth-place national finish in 1998 to a national championship three-peat from 2001 through 2003, the Bulldogs completed one of the greatest climbs in Truman athletics history. The 2003 team not only sustained the championship tradition established by its predecessors, but elevated it to unprecedented levels of dominance, securing its place among the finest teams in Truman State University history.
