Sharron Washington was an outstanding athlete at Hadley Tech in St. Louis, where he was captain of his football and track teams, finishing second in the open-200 at the state track meet in 1961. He was selected as the Most Outstanding Athlete as a senior. He was also a five-time golden glove champion. He entered the university in 1963 and soon made an impact on the Bulldog football team. He was chosen to the All-MIAA second team as a sophomore and was first team All-Conference the next two seasons. Mr. Washington was a catalyst on two MIAA championship teams, 1964 and 1965. He led the conference in scoring and rushing in 1965 and was fifth nationally in scoring and tenth nationally in rushing that year. He was selected to the honorable mention All-American team. Again, in 1966 he led the MIAA in scoring. Mr. Washington was also a member of three Bulldog track teams and won conference championships as a hurdler. He was drafted by the Houston Oilers of the National Football League and was a wide receiver on the taxi squad. A year later, he went with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League as a running back. He played for Hamilton in 1967 and 1968. Then he started teaching and coaching in the St. Louis area, first at Soldan High School in track and football for eight years. From 1976 until 1982 he coached at O'Fallon Tech but still coached cross country and swimming at Soldan and track at Harris-Stowe College. At O'Fallon Tech he was involved with the full sports program and he was head football coach. In the three-year span at O'Fallon the team lost only six games. O'Fallon Tech teams in 1980 and 1982 were district champions. The 1980 team lost to Hazelwood Central in the state semi-finals. Mr. Washington received the John Buckner award in 1979 for dedication as a coach to youth and athletes and Coach of the Year accolades at O'Fallon Tech in 1980. In 1983 he moved to Kirkwood High School where he has been assistant football coach under university alumnus, Dale Collier. Mr. Washington was head track coach and chairman of the physical education department at Kirkwood.
