Roland Mangold was born in Wels, Austria in 1956. He graduated from Jarvis High School in Toronto in 1975 and came to Truman that fall as a top linebacker prospect for new head coach Ron Taylor. Prior to his freshman campaign, however, Mangold was thrown into the mix of Bulldog offensive lineman and emerged from preseason practice as a starting tackle. Mangold would go on to earn honorable mention all-MIAA honors as a freshman. He was the most consistent blocker on a surprising 7-4 team that battled its way to second place in the MIAA. The next season the Bulldogs would earn a share of the conference title, unfortunately Mangold was sidelined in the latter part of the year. Mangold was back starting at guard as a junior. The 1977 Bulldog offensive line, junior guards Mangold and Darrell Buffington, sophomore tackles John Mulchrone and Gary Wolke and sophomore center Joe Battaglia, received high praise as the team wielded a dangerous running game. For his senior campaign Mangold shifted to the tackle position. His efforts in his final season earned first-team all-MIAA honors. The three-time letterman's outstanding career at Truman did not go unnoticed back home in Canada. Mangold was drafted in the fourth round of the 1979 Canadian Football League draft by the Montreal Aloutettes.
