Gerald "Shag" Grossnickel, a native of Carlisle, Iowa, lettered in football four years, basketball two years and track three years between 1938-42. He earned honorable mention All-MIAA recognition as a senior fullback. After graduation, he served during World War II in the Naval Physical Education program. After the war, he returned to Kirksville, serving as Adair County Sheriff for eight years, followed by twelve years as County Assessor. He also served as Public Administrator for eight years. Since 1960, he has been president of Grossnickle Insurance Company. Mr. Grossnickle has served as president of the Kirksville Quarterback Club and the Bulldog Booster Club. Since graduating from the university, he has given unfailing support to the university athletic programs and the participating student-athletes. Many times, he has helped student-athletes in their time of need, especially is they were a little discouraged or homesick.
