Bill Cable, a native of Hannibal, attended college on this campus for two years and transferred to the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He graduated from Missouri in 1956 and immediately started his career at Truman. However, it was interrupted by a two-year hitch in the Army, most served in Korea, where he edited an award-winning company newspaper. After returning to the campus in 1958, his time for the next 14 years was divided between directing the University Publication Office, helping with some of the news bureau workload and creating and organizing a sports information office. He also spent part of a year as student newspaper adviser. In 1972, he was named the first full-time Director of Sports Information, a position he held until 1995. He served on various committees of the College Sports Information Directors of America, including the Academic All-American Committee for student-athletes. Numerous publications of his received CoSIDA awards, and he was inducted into the CoSIDA National Hall of Fame.
