After lettering in football and basketball as a freshman at Wisconsin-River Falls, he transferred to the university in 1939, where he lettered three years in football as a halfback-defensive back, in basketball as guard-forward, and in track as a sprinter. Mr. Bohmbach was named to the MIAA second All-Conference team in 1940 and was elected captain of the Bulldog track team in 1942 as a sophomore. He received the Stickler Cup Award as the outstanding athlete-scholar at the university. Mr. Bohmbach was also a member of Blue Key and president of the junior class. In 1942, he entered the Navy, serving four years as a Chief Petty Officer in Gene Tunney's Physical Fitness Program. He was also a Lt. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota and taught one summer here at the university.
