Like "Horse" Dabney, Dave Grant attended another school before playing for the Bulldog football team. He was at the University of Missouri but decided to transfer to Truman. It didn't take Mr. Grant long to make a profound impact on Bulldog football. Another two-way lineman, he was chosen to the 1961 All-MIAA team after helping the Bulldogs win the conference championship and the 1961 Mineral Water Bowl played at Excelsior Springs, Mo. Sportswriters covering the game were impressed with his line play and chose him as the outstanding tackler in the university's 22-8 victory over Parsons College. Mr. Grant didn't rest on his laurels. He was named to the All-MIAA team for the following three years, only the third Bulldog to every be selected to an All-Conference football team four times. The other two are Arnold Embree and Mike Richardson. Mr. Grant was captain of the All-League team three times and co-captain of the Bulldog team in 1964. A highlight of his football career was in 1962 when he was named to the Williamson Rating All-American first team. Two years later he was chosen to the NCAA All-American second team. After graduation in 1965 he served as line coach at Hampton Institute in Virginia for four years. He was a counselor at Thomas Nelson Community College for the next three years and then served as coordinator of student activities at the community college.
