Dan Futrell, who competed intercollegiate in the late 1970's is the Bulldog's only four-time Division II track All-American. He is also a three-time Division I All-American. Mr. Futrell specialized in 800 meters. In 1979 he won the Division II outdoor 800 meters in a time of 1:46.9 which still stands as a Division II outdoor record for that event. Mr. Futrell also finished third in the 1979 Division I indoor 800 and fourth in the Division I outdoor 800. While running for the Bulldogs he set four school and five MIAA conference records. In 1979 he recorded the second fastest 800-meter time in the world. After his graduation in 1980 he continued to compete in 800-meter races. Mr. Futrell ranked eighth in the world before the 1980 Olympic trials and advanced to the semi-finals of the 800 in the trials that year. Four years later he reached the second round of the 1984 Olympic trials. In 1988 he was ranked sixth indoors and again advanced to the second round of the Olympic trials. Mr. Futrell lived in Los Angeles while competing for the Santa Monica Track Club, but he moved back to Missouri and spent five years as a fireman paramedic. At present he lives in St. Louis and works for the Highway Transportation Department as a designer.
