Bob Evans was reared in Macon and entered the university in 1946. As a freshman, he played the halfback position for the football Bulldogs. However an injury sidelined him after his freshman year and he served as a student assistant. After earning a B.S.E. degree in 1949 Mr. Evans served as an assistant football coach in 1950 under Coach James Dougherty. The following year he went to Mount Pleasant, Iowa as a member of the coaching staff. He was appointed head basketball coach in 1953 and head football coach in 1956. Mr. Evans became the athletic director in 1958. Since taking over the reins of the Mount Pleasant football programs 33 years ago, he has compiled 201 wins maybe 202. He only had 91 losses and two ties coming into the 1988 season. He has also guided his teams to 16 Southeast Seven conference titles and four state playoffs. His 1963 squad was undefeated, untied and unscored upon that season and won the single class mythical championship, beating Cedar Rapids-Jefferson, the number one team in the state. Between 1958-61, his teams reeled off 40 straight victories, and he was selected in 1959 as the Des Moines Register Coach of the Year, an honor that a recipient can win only once. Other honors bestowed on Mr. Evans have included induction into the Iowa High School Hall of Fame, his selection as District 6 Coach of the Year in 1979 and one of eight outstanding coaches in America that season, president of the Iowa High School Coaches Association, 1974 High School All-State Shrine game coach, one of the founders of the Iowa High School Coaches Association and color commentator for the Iowa Football Sports Network for the past 15 years. As athletic director, Mr. Evans says he is particularly proud of the growth of the Mount Pleasant athletic program and the construction of an athletic complex ten years ago, at which time one-half million dollars was raised in only two days. Mr. Evans announced his retirement as football coach at the end of the 1988 season.
