Mark Sobol was from Orland Park, Ill., and attended Sandburg High School before enrolling at the university. He was a four-year defensive lineman for the Bulldogs, earning All-MIAA accolades three times and honorable mention All-American recognition in 1978. He played one year of semi-pro football for the Quad City Blackhawks and had a tryout with Montreal of the Canadian Football League. After completing work toward a degree from the university he went to Hugoton, Kan., as head wrestling coach and assistant football coach for a year, followed by three years at Neosho, Mo., in the same capacity. His wrestling team was ranked in the top 10 and produced an individual state champion. He spent two years at Paris, Mo., as head football coach and athletic director. He then moved on as the assistant football coach at Herculaneum, Mo. The 1991 Herculaneum team finished second in the state playoffs.
