James Dougherty served the university with distinction in several capacities. As an undergraduate student, he lettered four years in football as a halfback between 1928-31. Jim Dougherty also lettered in basketball and track at the university. In 1933 he received the Stickler Cup, which goes to a student-athlete possessing qualities of scholarship, citizenship and leadership. After serving as a graduate assistant for the Bulldog Football Team for one year, James coached football at Marceline, Neosho, and Mountain Grove high schools. He served in the Navy during World War II and upon his return to civilian life, he coached the Bulldog Football Team from 1946-50. Early in 1951, Jim was recalled into the Navy because of the Korean conflict. After his separation from service he worked for radio station KIRX in Kirksville until 1962 when he was appointed the first full-time Athletic Director at the university. He held the position until his retirement in 1974. He passed away the following year.
