Fred Lyles, a three-time All-Conference football selection at Sumner High School in St. Louis, entered the university in 1959 and played football four years. He was a two-time All-MIAA second team selection and a member of a Bulldog line that surrendered offensive yardage with grudging reluctance. He was named the outstanding lineman in the 1961 Mineral Water Bowl game, won by the Bulldogs 22-8 over Parsons (Iowa) College. After receiving a B.S. degree in 1963 he taught in the St. Louis Public School system for three years and then spent a year as a physical education instructor with the Lincoln, Neb. job core and another year with Moses Lake job core center. He was with the Kansas City employment center for one year and with the Human Development Corporation as an instructor for disadvantaged youth for three years. He spent the next eight years as a counselor and instructor for disadvantaged youth at the Southern Illinois University manpower section. He returned to the St. Louis Public Schools in the early 1980's and received an M.A. degree from this university. He was an industrial arts instructor and athletic director at the St. Louis Visual and Performing Arts High School and he also coached girl's basketball and track.
