Bill Stock was a versatile athlete at the university. He played three years of football, basketball and tennis in the late 1930's and early 1940's, capturing All-MIAA recognition in football and basketball. When he talks about his tennis career for the Bulldogs, he does it with complete modesty, so not much is known about his performances in that sport--he did say that he took care of the courts. Mr. Stock was the 1942 recipient of the Stickler Cup. After graduation he went into the Air Force. During World War II he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and three air medals for Meritorious Achievement in the invasion of Western Europe. He rose to the rank of captain. After the war Mr. Stock was in the bottled gas business in Quincy, IL for 20 years. He sold the business in 1965 to a large corporation and started a kitchen and plumbing business. He is currently involved in the cultured marble business.
