Darrel Gourley was an All-Conference football and basketball player at Mountain Grove High School. As a senior he was in military service and competed in two sports. In 1946 he enrolled at the university and started every football game for four years at quarterback. As a freshman he was named to the All-MIAA team and scored three touchdowns in a Bulldog win over Southwest Missouri State in Springfield. He also lettered two years in track and was on the basketball squad two seasons. He also served as junior varsity basketball coach one year. Since receiving a B.S.E. degree in 1950 he has been a teacher and coach. He coached on the high school level at Corydon, Iowa, Milan, Fulton and Chillicothe for eight years. He then went to William Jewell College in Liberty where he has been an assistant football coach for 19 years, head track coach for 23 years, head cross-country coach for 15 years, head wrestling coach for seven years and head golf coach for one year. In addition to many teaching responsibilities on the high school and college level, he has served as intramural director at William Jewell and has administered various athletic activities on the district and national level. He belongs to numerous professional organizations and has held a number of NAIA chairmanships. He has been named coach of the year several times in track and golf.
